The Doris McCarthy Gallery is a professional public art gallery within the University of Toronto Scarborough that advances artistic innovation, critical thinking, and cultural exchange through engagement with contemporary art. The Gallery undertakes to initiate and support education, research, and knowledge dissemination; engage the University of Toronto community and wider public of Scarborough and the eastern Greater Toronto Area through its exhibitions and related programming; and develop, manage, and make accessible its collection for the purposes of research, teaching, and exhibition.

Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Executive Director and Chief Curator, and in collaboration with other Doris McCarthy Gallery staff and gallery attendants, the Collections Coordinator will oversee the DMG collection, will write acquisition proposals, Cultural Property, and grant applications. The incumbent will manage the collections using Embark Collections Management Software. The Collections Coordinator will navigate the complexities of working within an \xe2\x80\x98A\xe2\x80\x99 designated institution. The Collections Coordinator may need to work some evenings and weekends throughout the year.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining a database of art collection information
  • Applying established standards to control the distribution of access to designated University spaces
  • Providing detailed information on processes, policies, and procedures
  • Following rules and procedural instructions when setting and maintaining climate conditions
  • Checking that safety and conservation standards can be met by those who borrow collection materials
  • Developing components of programs and initiatives that advance strategic objectives
  • Keeping well-informed on exhibits, collections and artwork in the collection
  • Coordinating the shipping and/or receiving of goods
Essential Qualifications:
  • A Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in an arts related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have at least three years previous art gallery experience and knowledge of contemporary art, including direct experience installing contemporary art and managing collections
  • Must have strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft office, collections management software, and desktop publishing.
  • Must have knowledge of processes surrounding the certification of cultural property, and the oversight of an \xe2\x80\x98A\xe2\x80\x99 designated institution
  • Must have experience with Macintosh computers
  • Must have proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to deal with diverse public audiences
  • A working knowledge of art-specific databases. Experience utilizing EmbARK is highly preferred.
  • Must possess tact, diplomacy and a good attitude
  • Must demonstrated commitment to service excellence
  • Must be flexible and have the ability to work to deadlines under pressure
