The opportunity:



The Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) within the University of Manitoba's Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources invites applications for a full-time technician.

This position will support research conducted at the CEOS-led Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO) in Churchill, Manitoba -- a $45M, multidisciplinary Arctic research facility funded primarily by the Canada Foundation for Innovation. The facility includes two outdoor pools for process-based studies of Arctic change, a network of environmental observatories, and a research vessel monitoring atmospheric, oceanic, and sea ice conditions across Hudson Bay. Officially opened in August 2024, CMO research addresses scientific, technological, and socio-environmental challenges and opportunities in Hudson Bay and the broader Arctic Ocean in the context of climate change.

The technician will serve as staff-in-residence, responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the OSIM facility and related infrastructure at CMO. Based in a remote location (Churchill), the successful candidate must demonstrate strong decision-making skills and the ability to take timely action to support diverse scientific projects.

The qualifications and experience we're looking for:



Bachelor's degree is required. Five years directly related experience is required. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude is required. Demonstrated experience working with small motors and pumps is required. Demonstrated experience working outdoors and in cold environments is required. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered (e.g., Grade 12 high school diploma/Journeyman status with significant related experience). Demonstrated effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team is essential. Ability and willingness to learn new techniques and administer specific phases of projects under general direction required. Ability to operate and maintain tractors, off-road vehicles, pick-up trucks, various boats, scissor lift, etc., is required. Demonstrated basic computer skills (email, internet) and Microsoft Office skills (Excel and Word) required. Valid Class 5 Manitoba driver's license is required. Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and repair/fabricate as required. Ability to train and supervise staff and students to ensure proper safety protocols are being followed is required. Ability to work within time and budgetary constraints is required. Ability to work evenings and weekends in order to supervise and assist with research projects, as required. Physically capable of performing duties as assigned. Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required. Familiarity with Churchill and/or northern communities is an asset. Experience working with ice, snow, pools, the Arctic or marine environment is an asset. Valid boating license (pleasure craft and SVOP) is an asset. Hydraulic, electrical, and carpentry skills, considered an asset. Experience with and/or awareness of environmental regulations is an asset.
Training required (will be provided to the successful candidate):

Possession and Acquisition License (PAL). Transportation of Dangerous Goods (certified in ground and air). First Aid, including CPR. Basic Laboratory Safety WHMIS. HAZMAT training. Oil training. Confined spaces and fall arrest training. Gantry Crane operation. Skid steer operation.
