Sinai Health is continuously transforming our spaces and practices to ensure that we provide the safest, highest quality care for the people we serve. We are currently developing and implementing of a fully automated, barcode-enabled Closed Loop Medication Management Program. This program of interrelated projects will enhance patient safety and improve operational and clinical efficiency and effectiveness.

At the Mount Sinai Hospital campus, the projects include:

  • the implementation of systems and technologies to fully automate the inpatient pharmacy that will support the dispensing of barcoded, unit-dose medications
  • patient care unit automation for medication storage and dispensing (e.g. Automated Dispensing Cabinets)
  • roll-out of mobile workstations to support nursing documentation and medication management workflow at close to the point of care
  • barcode verification of medications at the point of administration


In parallel to the Closed Loop Medication Management Program, Sinai Health is also undergoing a major renovation project (Renew Sinai). Renew Sinai Phase 3A is currently underway and will result in state of the art new Operating Rooms, Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Inpatient Surgical Unit, and several support areas.

As a means to ensure the successful implementation of the Closed Loop Medication System (CLMS) and to optimize the impact of Renew Sinai, Sinai Health is looking for a CLMS Nursing Project Lead to facilitate and engage Nursing, Pharmacy and other key stakeholders in defining the medication management model for the Inpatient Units at Mount Sinai campus, in alignment with current industry standards.

The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the inter-professional team in managing the direct and indirect impact of the selected CLMS model on the patient and staff experience and assist in leading change management activities to support the achievement of the project milestones. The incumbent will facilitate and lead end-user training of both system functionalities and nursing workflow in support of the continued roll-out of Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) and nursing mobile workstations.

Reporting to the Director of Nursing Education and Academic Affairs, and in collaboration with the Senior Director, Pharmacy, the Closed Loop Medication Management Project Director and Pharmacy Lead, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Partners with Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Disciplines, Information Services, Human Factors, Redevelopment and other key stakeholders to develop a medication management model and associated policies and procedures that will enhance patient safety, quality, service delivery and efficient and effective clinical workflows aligned with best practice.
  • Takes a lead role in creating a culture of safety, risk mitigation, quality, evidence-informed practice and service across the organization, to improve practices and service delivery related to the assigned projects.
  • Collaborates with leadership from Clinical and Support departments from across the organization as well as the CLMS Project Team to provide the strategy and continuous improvement plans to support the CLMS project.
  • Promotes and maintains a safe patient care and work environment by assessing for and managing actual and potential risks; this also includes engaging in safety audits, promoting staff accountability, adherence to quality practice, patient and staff safety, and ensuring that adequate structures and processes are in place.
  • Collaborates with project and program teams working on development and implementation of new and revised clinical information systems to harmonize and align practice based on best available evidence.
  • Ensures clinical practices comply with legislative, regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Employs best available evidence to inform nursing practice decisions and directions within the context of Sinai Health.
  • Provides leadership in the identification and development of policies and procedures related to CLMS.
  • Leads the development and delivery of end user training of Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) and nursing mobile workstations, including the adaptation of vendor training materials, as needed.
  • Partners with stakeholders to outline mechanisms for testing, mock-ups, pilot plans and to evaluate outcomes and lead post-implementation optimization initiatives.
  • Continues to enhance and improve patient care by utilizing relationship management techniques with clinical areas, participating in committees, attending education workshops and seminars, etc.
  • Participates as a member/leader of departmental and corporate committees and teams.
  • Performs other duties related to the role as required.


Job Requirements
  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing.
  • Successful completion of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in nursing from an accredited educational institution; master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in nursing or in progress preferred.
  • At least five (5) years\xe2\x80\x99 recent nursing experience in an acute care setting.
  • Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of medication management clinical standards of practice, documentation requirements, and clinical workflows.
  • Solid knowledge of technology that can enable a safe and effective end-to-end medication management system according to current industry standards.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint).
  • Experience in process assessment and redesign and documentation of clinical workflow; ability to document in Visio or similar tool.
  • Significant experience in quality improvement and change management.
  • Success in leading, monitoring and evaluating process/systems to identify and achieve efficiencies (workflow and process redesign).
  • Prior experience providing education and training an asset.
  • Prior experience with ADCs and/or Cerner software an asset.
  • Proven effectiveness promoting compliance with professional and ethical practices, accreditation standards, and applicable legislation.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; professional, diplomatic and confident with a proven ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities with excellent interpersonal and inter-professional teamwork skills.
  • Proven demonstration of workplace excellence shown by commitment to strong job performance and attendance.
