Clinical Research Assistant

by focusing on patient recruitment, data collection, scheduling and conducting study visits and follow-ups as necessary.
Work performed
Study setup and initiation focusing on developing electronic consent and data capture using REDcap (note: REDCap training can be provided to upskill to meet the requirements of this position)
Navigating administrative processes in the clinical setting relating to research study start-up and ongoing data collection
Identify and evaluate patient eligibility for inclusion and enrolment in research studies
Obtain patient informed consent and maintain participant screening records
Schedule and carry out study visits, administer surveys and questionnaires, and perform data collection via in-person, telephone, hardcopy mailout and internet-based mediums
Perform chart reviews and extract pertinent clinical information relevant to research studies
Liaise between research participants, staff, and investigators, and keep meticulous records
Extract and record data from databases or medical charts, and maximize data quality
Accurate and timely completion and submission of paper and electronic data capture forms
Create and maintain research charts on registered subjects
Develop, update and maintain study databases and source document worksheets
Ensure adherence to and maintenance of protocols and associated documents
Perform data entry and manage clinical and research databases with accuracy
Prepare and participate in audits and study monitoring visits from various regulatory bodies
Maintain electronic and paper research files
Organize and present in meetings to report on project progress
Maintain strict confidentiality related to identification and release of study data
Ensure adherence to appropriate procedures, protocols and practices for patient consent and ethical review in studies by following good clinical practice (GCP); including standard operating procedures (SOP) development, research ethics board (REB) applications and meeting Health Canada regulatory and industry sponsor requirements
Consequences of error/judgement
The successful applicant is expected to understand the ethical principles of research involving human subjects and to adhere to these ethical guidelines. The applicant will exercise initiative, problem solving and make professional decisions and recommendation on all aspects of research work. Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, image, reputation and financial status of the research project. Inappropriate judgment could result in loss of potential research, in funding shortfalls for research grants or contracts, and may flaw the research and ultimately impact their employment status.
Supervision received
The Clinical Research Assistant will report directly to the Clinical Research Program Manager, who is under the supervision of the Research Director and Division Head. The incumbent will also report to and receive direction from the Principal Investigator of each assigned project. The Clinical Research Assistant works with physicians and staff in the emergency department, the inpatient orthopaedic ward and the outpatient orthopaedic trauma clinic at Vancouver General Hospital. Coordination with administrative personnel is essential in order to complete study requirements and obtain patient information for data collection and submission.
Qualifications
University degree in a health-related discipline and 1-5 years of recent related experience in a clinical research setting. Experience in client relationships, data management or analysis will be considered an asset.
Strong problem-solving abilities, excellent organizational skills and ability to exercise good judgment and discretion while working with confidential information and vulnerable populations
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Clear ability to establish rapport with patients, communicate clearly, be a good listener, and have the ability to assess a situation and respond accordingly
Knowledge and proficiency in computer applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, email and Internet); knowledge of REDCap is an asset* Proficiency in patient interview techniques, research subject counseling, database management and online Research Ethics Board submissions
Knowledge of medical and surgical terminologies, as well as familiarity with the conduct of directed musculoskeletal exams and measurements, are considered assets
Dedication to accuracy and attention to detail
Accept responsibility and work independently under minimal supervision
Solid judgment and a proven ability to maintain confidentiality, tact and discretion in interactions and in handling sensitive information
Ability to prioritize work, multi-task, and to meet deadlines and schedules
Work on multiple projects without compromising the integrity of each project
Ability to learn new software, including website maintenance and troubleshooting
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
Organizational status
The Clinical Research Assistant will work on-site in-person with a team of research staff, administrative staff, physicians, nurses and liaise with other healthcare professionals to ensure that each research study is conducted to meet or exceed regulatory and institutional standards.

The Vancouver Acute Orthopaedic Trauma Program has an emphasis on the assessment and management of multiply-injured patients, and major injuries resulting from blunt trauma. Vancouver Acute functions as a Level I trauma center. The Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship at Vancouver General Hospital was the first of its kind in Canada, and has been training Canadian and foreign fellows since 1984.
