Position Summary
Clinical Nurse Specialist (Palliative Care)
Your goal in this position is to provide leadership and is responsible for the promotion and enhancement of palliative care in a diverse population across a continuum with primarily oncology patients. You will initiate and participate in professional and organizational activities to improve and advance nursing practice in the area of oncology/palliative care. You assume a leadership role in influencing clinical practice and patient outcomes and collaborates with the broader health care team and community partners regarding complex and challenging patient care situations. You integrate research into practice to ensure best practice standards are maintained. You will create, utilize, and/or disseminate new nursing knowledge. You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with excellent leadership and collaboration skills. You have excellent dialogue and facilitation skills. You also have excellent change management skills and project management skills. This position supports the hospital's academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.
On a practical level, you will
Have expert clinical skills in the assessment and management of cancer pain and symptoms as well as end of life care
Provide assessment and consultation, in palliative care (primarily) to patients/families with complex and challenging health care needs across all clinical programs and in different settings
Work in partnership with program leadership and front line staff to develop, implement and evaluate best practices in oncology and palliative care within the Cancer Care Program and across the organization
Participate in inter-professional education initiatives involving nurses, physicians, allied health team members and students
Play a leadership role in quality activities and programmatic development
Lead the development and evaluation of policies, standards of care, and clinical services in relation to the assessment and management of patients requiring oncology and palliative care including their families
Engage in or conduct research and participate in inter-professional education/research projects, as required
Engage in scholarly activities, such as presentations and publications
Qualifications
Masters in Nursing is a requirement; and a specialty in palliative care is preferred
CNA certification in Hospice Palliative Care or Oncology, an asset
Current certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing
Previous experience as a CNS (Palliative Care), preferred
3 - 5 years recent experience in oncology/palliative care nursing including experience in symptom management
Eligible for cross appointment with Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto or another academic institution
Knowledge or experience of community/in-home nursing preferred
