The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Mental Health will bring expertise in mental health and substance use to improve patient outcomes, build capacity and foster system of change. The CNS will work closely with and be an integral part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team focused on delivering evidence-based care to our patients and customers.
Reporting to the Director, Mental Health and Substance Use, the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) - Mental Health and Substance Use will have a lead role in collaborating with stakeholders and teams within the Mental Health and Substance Use program, within the organization, and with external partners to ensure continuity of care. The CNS will advance and optimize clinical care outcomes, build team capacity, education/mentoring, enhance safety and patient experience, develop programs and standards of care, create partnerships with key stakeholders, and improve overall accessibility to care, which reflects the vision, mission and values of Michael Garron Hospital, Toronto East Health Network.
The CNS demonstrates advanced clinical expertise in mental health and substance use, As a role model the CNS addresses complexities in mental health and substance use through collaborative team consultation, leadership and capacity building within the program. The CNS assesses, plans, educates, implements and evaluates patient needs while providing solutions and resources to guide patients and their families through their care journey. Moreover, the CNS supports the implementation, growth and development of key mental health and substance use program areas.
EDUCATION
Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing required.
Completion of Master's degree in Nursing required; in progress will be considered (e.g. degree requirements are almost complete or complete and near graduation).
Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing.
Certified in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Canda (CPMHN(c)) credential, preferred.
Member of professional organization(s) in nursing such as RNAO or other relevant organizations.
Current CPR or BLS certificate required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 5 years relevant clinical specialty-related experience (mental health and substance use) in an acute care hospital setting.
Demonstrated advanced knowledge and synthesis of advanced nursing practice within mental health and substance use care.
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of mental health and substance use management.
Experience working in a leadership role an asset.
Evidence of advanced knowledge and synthesis of adult and learning theories as well as education evaluation for individuals and groups.
Demonstrated ability to work in a self-directed manner using well developed leadership, critical thinking, organizational and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to monitor and report on quality metrics and indicators.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal, team development and conflict management skills.
Knowledge and skill in regard to patient safety, quality improvement, change leadership, project management and evaluation an asset.
Demonstrated knowledge in research methods, and experience originating and conducting research an asset.
Knowledge of models of care regarding interprofessional practice and education.
Demonstrated flexibility to work occasional shifts and weekends to support operational needs.
Excellent time management and attendance record.
Proficient with Microsoft office and other data processing software.
