Comprised of the Credit Valley Hospital, the Mississauga Hospital, and the Queensway Health Centre, along with several satellite locations, THP serves the growing and diverse populations of Mississauga, West Toronto, and surrounding communities, and is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto.If you are passionate about your career, motivated to improve the health of the community, and committed to excellence, quality, and patient safety consider joining our Better Together team!:The Laboratory Medicine and Genetics (LMG) program is a large, complex program that operates across 4 sites and encompasses a range of modalities, including biochemistry, microbiology, hematology, transfusion medicine, flow cytometry, anatomical pathology, specimen collection services, as well as a regional genetics program. Over 6,000,000 tests are performed annually with more than 2,000 specimens arriving daily. A continually Laboratory program is supported under the umbrella of a robust Laboratory Quality Management System. The program supports an active learning environment with learners in all roles.We are looking for a strong leader who has a proven track record in collaboration, people engagement and decision-making. The successful candidate will lead and manage all aspects of the Microbiology Laboratory including developing a strong team of various laboratory professionals, facilitating change, mitigating risk and improving patient safety. You will provide leadership in the coordination, evaluation and continuous improvement of laboratory activities and collaborate in the development of the program strategic and operational plans.Leadership Responsibilities:

  • As part a member of the laboratory leadership team, collaborates with an inter-professional team in the development and planning of key strategic and operational initiatives.
  • Provide laboratory expertise to programs, committees, best practice initiatives and healthcare professional/patient education
  • Plan and develop with physicians partner(s), the selection and scope of quality patient testing based on customer needs and changing technology
  • Actively participates in committees, both internal and external to network with peers for benchmarking, best practice and, problem-solving
  • Guide development of and approve policies, processes and procedures that align with the quality management system and legislative requirements.
  • Plan recruitment, training, and ongoing competency/education of staff.
  • Mentor, develop and provide timely performance feedback to all staff.
  • Effectively manage staffing, equipment maintenance and inventory within a defined budget
  • Plan and support the procurement of capital equipment
  • Develop/implement quality activities in collaboration with Laboratory Quality Manager to maximize service and minimize patient risk
  • Review and analyze data for trends, coordinate quality improvement initiatives and, guide corrective actions
  • Responsible for providing a safe working environment for staff and supporting safety initiatives in collaboration with Laboratory Safety Officer and the Occupational Health and Safety department
  • Practices according to, and is knowledgeable in, the Laboratory Quality Management System.
Key Qualifications:
  • Baccalaureate degree in a health-related discipline and/or member in good standing of the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
  • Three years of formal or informal leadership experience, and at least 5 years relevant experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting
  • Demonstration of a strong understanding of Microbiology required.
  • Proven leadership and management skills including: critical and innovative thinking, problem solving, decision making, and managing projects and change
  • Strong initiative with the ability to formulate long range strategic goals and objectives while translating to various partners.
  • Strong business management skills (strategic planning, budgeting, resource allocation, coordinating, managing projects and analytics)
  • Strong emotional intelligence, communication and leadership skills
  • Proven experience in leading collaboratively with physician partner(s)
  • Knowledge of best practice guidelines, relevant legislation and the requirements as they pertain to the Microbiology Laboratory.
  • Ability to function effectively and lead during periods of rapid change and transition
  • Demonstrate a key desire for learning and understanding the strategic direction of the Microbiology Laboratory
