Clinical Externs can be clinical learners in occupational therapy and/or physiotherapy programs. Externs are unregulated health care providers and will work as part of an interprofessional team under supervision of regulated health care providers. This is a paid position as part of the Ontario Government\'s Enhanced Extern Program (EEP).

Qualifications:
  • Qualified applicants must be enrolled in an accredited Occupational/Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy assistant program
  • Demonstrate good organizational and time management skillS
  • Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
  • Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
  • Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred
  • Students who have successfully completed a recent clinical placement preferred
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
  • Excellent clinical skills and competencies
Duties:
  • Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the regulated health professional assigned to them on the unit
  • Practices in a manner consistent with organizational policies, professional standards, while taking into account guidelines for unregulated care providers
  • Works with unit staff to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties
  • Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating as per the hospital policy
  • Provides assistance in activities in daily living which includes dressing, toileting, feeding, promoting patient safety through falls risk and skin assessments
  • Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards
  • Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever in need
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Participates as an effective member of an interprofessional team
