Reporting to the Manager, Nursing Innovation & Development, the Clinical Educator - Nursing Transition to Practice , serves as a role model and leader to support nursing and inter-professional care provided by nurses and nursing learners in our Ministry of Health workforce programs (IEN Internship, NGG program, Clinical Scholar Program, and others) that optimizes nursing outcomes and experiences while enhancing the safety, efficiency, effectiveness and accessibility of patient care by:
Planning, implementing and evaluating education strategies for nursing and the inter-professional team to support transition to practice
Being change agents and roles models that advocate for and create learning/education environments that enhance clinical and professional practice and life-long learning
Working with other nurse leaders to support the development of nursing staff in the transition to practice period, including participation in nursing and corporate education and other initiatives
Collaborating with inter-professional teams and external partners to influence and advance best practices in education and evidence based nursing practice transitions
Responsibilities:
The primary role of the Clinical Educator; Nursing Transition to Practice is to support nursing learners and facilitate programs and learning environments where evidence-based knowledge is translated via education to optimize transition to practice nursing outcomes and experiences. This includes developing program and educational plans and activities aimed at improving nursing/clinical knowledge, skills and competencies and in collaboration with others, supporting the ongoing professional development of ministry workforce program staff in the transition to practice phase. The focus of this role will be on leading and supporting the program development, orientation and education needs in our Ministry of Health workforce programs - specifically the SPEP Program, the Clinical Scholar Program and the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Program. Support for Clinical Extern staff at a local level may also be required.
The Clinical Nurse Educator has 3 main areas of responsibility.
Education:
Education and staff development, particularly in relation to nurses during their transition to practice periodAssess learning needs and styles of nursing staff transitioning to practice
Design and deliver education that is tailored to specific needs of early career nurses Providing support and mentorship for Clinical Externs locally
Incorporates evidence, best practices, and relevant research findings
Incorporates inter-professional core competencies where applicable
Incorporates best practices in education
Evaluates the effectiveness of education, revises education and learning activities to support changes
Provides timely feedback to nursing staff in the transition to practice period on their learning and application to their practice competence
Demonstrates CNO Professional Standards and guidelines
Consultation/Collaboration:
Collaborates and participates with the Nursing Practice & Education portfolio Managers and Directors to identify and support nursing initiatives, especially those that support the transition to practice needs of nurses in our ministry funded programs.
Engages members of the intra and interdisciplinary team, management team, Professional Practice and across hospital departments in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating program and educational initiatives related to ministry workforce programs.
Participates in the hospital's network of Clinical Educators - Nursing and works with other Clinical Educator - Nursing colleagues
Collaborates with the Clinical Managers to identify and facilitate IEN/Nursing Intern placements across Unity Health Toronto
Participates in hospital and corporate committees and other groups to represent the Educator perspective and serves as a bridge to the unit/program and Clinical Educator - Nursing Network by disseminating committee information and decisions
Collaborates with external partners through attendance at multihospital committees
Research and Quality Improvement:
Participates in research projects that contribute to nursing and/or interprofessional practice and education pertaining to their unit/program and the Corporation
Supports and participates in the implementation of evidence based practice (best practice guidelines and other forms of evidence) and quality improvement initiatives on unit/in programs including Corporate initiatives
Qualifications:
Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the General Class
Masters degree in nursing, health administration and leadership or education, required
Minimum of 3-5 years of acute care experience, required
Minimum of 2-5 years of leadership in professional practice, strongly preferred
Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program, Level II: Basic Rescuer certification, required
Familiarity with Ministry of Health workforce programs and strategies is an asset
Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with nurses and inter professional teams to improve patient care and outcomes
Strong leadership and communication skills (writing, active listening, conflict resolution, ability to inspire others, articulate a vision for rehab nursing practice, delegation, mentoring, coaching, goal setting etc.),
Demonstrated leadership in committee work, education, quality improvement, and knowledge translation initiatives
Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Unity Health Toronto
Must have an excellent attendance record
Occasional hours outside of business hours may be required. Flexible work arrangements outside of traditional business hours may be considered.
Travel between sites will be required
