Responsibilities for Inpatient and Outpatient Care:

Clinical Assistants are licensed physicians employed by Nova Scotia Health to provide medical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. This position is assigned to the Department of Hematology. Participation in the call schedule is required. Clinical Assistants report directly to the Hematology Program Director or designate and indirectly to the Central Zone Executive Medical Director through the Director of Medical Affairs, NSH.

The Hematology/Cellular Therapy and Transplant Clinical Assistant is a licensed physician employed by the Nova Scotia Health Authority to provide medical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. Clinical Assistants report directly to the Hematology Program Director or designate and indirectly to the Central Zone Executive Medical Director through the Director of Medical Affairs, NSH. The Clinical Assistant functions as a member of the Hematology team, liaising with pharmacy staff, nursing, house staff, attending staff and other members of the health care team in the development and implementation of the patient care plan both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Participation in the call schedule is required. Patients under the service typically have leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma or any other malignant or benign hematological disorders. Clinical responsibilities will include but are not limited to completing admissions, providing daily assessment and active management of inpatients including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, arranging consultations with other departments for care and investigations; minor procedures, discharge summaries and associated duties, and assessing patients in the Medical Day Unit, under the supervision of the Hematology Attending Staff. The procedures include but are not limited to performing bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, lumbar punctures, Hickman line removal, skin biopsies, and stem cell infusions. In all the above, the Assistant will only perform procedures after full training and competence has been established and approved by the Division Head. This is a teaching hospital with varying degrees of participation from medical students, residents, and hematology fellows. You will be invited to attend academic rounds and participate in multidisciplinary patient care rounds. Candidate must be able to make sound decisions and communicate effectively.

  • CMPA coverage required
  • ACLS certification required
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
  • Prior experience in the area Internal Medicine / Hematology is an asset
  • Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
  • Mental and Visual demand - High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
  • Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

  • x 2 Permanent, Full-time positions
  • 8:00 am to 6:00 pm; 48 hours per week inclusive of on-call participation
Compensation and Incentives
  • $48.45 - $61.72 Hourly
