Description:

As a Clinical Surgical Assistant, you will be working alongside physicians, nurses, pharmacists and dieticians. You will examine patients, document patient history, conduct complete physical examinations, develop treatment plans in consultation with the attending/supervising physician, write appropriate orders, and enter these orders into the patient care system, either electronically or manually. An important part of this field of practice and role includes caring for patients registered in clinical research trials. Additionally, you will work in the surgical ward, and provide pre-and post-operative care as well as intra-operative surgical assistance. Appropriate supervision and support is provided and will begin with a formal orientation and assessment.

Required Qualifications:

Eligibility to work in Canada (e.g., Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and individuals with open work permits). English Language Proficiency. As a requirement for licensure by the CPSA, applicants must have taken the Academic version of International English Language Testing System (IELTS), achieving a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the components. Test results must be certified (notarized) by a Notary Public or any other government authorized entity. Exemptions are granted based on guidelines set out on the CPSA website (http://www.cpsa.ca/language-proficiency/). Medical Degree and Transcripts. Applicants must be a graduate of a medical school located outside of Canada and the USA, listed in the Foundation of Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) - International Medical Directory (IMD). Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME). As a requirement for licensure by the CPSA, applicants must have completed at least one full year of hands-on training (outside of Canada and the USA) after having completed their undergraduate medical training, no exceptions. Specialty training must show evidence of being hands on and supervised for it to meet this requirement.
Additional Required Qualifications:

Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE1). Applicants must have passed the MCC Qualifying Exam Part 1 prior to application. Hold registration for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry. Demonstrate currency of practice. Within the last three years, physicians need to have practiced independently, been in a regulated, supervised practice (in a role where the physician was not the most responsible physician) or been a part of a continuous postgraduate training program for a minimum of one year in the discipline you want to enter in Alberta. Fellowship training, community service, public service, national service, Medical Officer posts and practice experience do not fulfil this requirement. Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who have recent experience in an acute care facility; specifically, those who have had specific experience within the last 3 years in surgery. Prior experience working as a Clinical Assistant in a Canadian healthcare setting is an asset.
