About the Opportunity

An opportunity has arisen for a Clinical and Academic Neuropsychiatrist to join the Liaison consultation psychiatry service at the Department of Psychiatry, Dalhousie University and the Central Zone Mental Health and Addiction Program. This is a full time (1.0 FTE) opportunity with time split between a dedicated neuropsychiatry consult service (0.4 FTE), general consultation liaison psychiatry service (0.2 FTE), research (0.35 FTE) and education/leadership (0.05 FTE).
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, committed and academic neuropsychiatrist consultant with a keen focus on clinical excellence, medical education and leadership to work across mental and physical health in specialist settings, providing clinical leadership in service delivery, research, education and working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team. The Department of Psychiatry\xe2\x80\x99s inter-disciplinary liaison consultation team includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and addiction counselors and provides services at the Halifax Infirmary at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre and the Dartmouth General Hospital.

Responsibilities

Main duties of the job:

The post-holder will work clinically as a member of the liaison psychiatry service, engage in research, teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate) and/or leadership.

• Clinical

The post-holder will provide comprehensive psychiatric services for patients with emotional, behavioral and cognitive difficulties in the context of neurological illness four half days a week. They will also devote two half days a week to the provision of general consultation psychiatric services for patients on the medical and surgical wards. Clinical care will take place at the Halifax Infirmary at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre and the Dartmouth General Hospital, and in outpatient settings. Multidisciplinary collaboration with other physicians (psychiatrists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-physiologists family doctors etc.), clinical and academic psychologists, nurses, behavioral therapists, occupational therapists and social workers is expected.

• Research

The post-holder will be expected to establish and lead a world class neuropsychiatric and consultation liaison psychiatric research program to be based at the Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre. Research collaborations with other physicians (psychiatrists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-physiologists, family doctors etc.), clinical and academic psychologists, and other clinicians is expected. Research collaborations with other neuropsychiatry and consultation liaisons services across Canada and internationally will be highly encouraged and supported. Research endeavors will constitute 0.35 FTE of this position (three to four half-days/week) and applications for research grants from internal and external grand funding agencies are expected.

• Education

It is the expectation that the post-holder will support training and education of medical students, residents and fellows. They will serve as a preceptor for medical learners undertaking core and elective rotations with the neuropsychiatry and consultation liaison service. They will also participate in other formal teaching and examination programs for medical learners. About half- day a week will be devoted to participation in formal education and leadership roles.

• Leadership

Depending on the interest of the post-holder in leadership, opportunities exist in the Department of Psychiatry for both formal and informal leadership roles. These opportunities can be discussed with the successful candidate.

Eligibility

Fellowship in psychiatry, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada plus completion of at least one year Fellowship training in Neuropsychiatry at an academic centre, or equivalent such as a Certificate of Completion of Training in Neuropsychiatry and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry from the UK or Ireland, or Fellowship training in Neuropsychiatry/ Consultation Liaison Psychiatry American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. There should also be evidence of research training in Neuropsychiatry or extensive publication record in areas related to Neuropsychiatry/Consultation Liaison Psychiatry. Benefits

The annual remuneration for full time psychiatrists ranges is based upon academic rank, qualifications, and experience, as per university protocols and the Academic Funding Plan. Annual pay for Associate Professor level psychiatrists begins at $380,000, with additional remuneration paid for eligible on-call shifts covered and leadership roles. In addition to providing clinical services, psychiatrists at Dalhousie\xe2\x80\x99s Department of Psychiatry provides dedicated time for academic and/or research activities. Successful candidates receive access to funding for personal and professional development annually as well as relocation financial support. Standard scheduling provides 4 weeks off for vacation, plus 10 days for statutory holidays.
For this position specifically, the successful candidate will also be offered research start up funding of $ 50,000 per year for three years. They can also apply to the Department of Psychiatry\xe2\x80\x99s research fund for seed funding of up to $ 20, 000 per year through a competitive application process to fund specific research initiatives.

Academic Appointment
The successful candidate will be appointed to an academic rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (commensurate with qualifications) in the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University.
