Position Summary



Under the direction of the Manager, Public Operations and the Foreman, Public Works, the Equipment Operator, (the Operator) is primarily responsible for operating various pieces of equipment as trained and required on the gravel crew (e.g.: tandem and semi-trucks, loader, and plow truck with wing) to maintain, construct, and repair County roads and infrastructure. This position plays a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient transportation routes within Lethbridge County. In addition to regularly scheduled work, the operator will be expected to respond to emergency road maintenance requests as required. The operator will work independently and as part of a team to perform their work in varying weather and terrain conditions. This position is classified as an Equipment Operator 4 and will be expected to operate other equipment, and work on other crews, at or below this classification from time to time as required or assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities



Perform work with the Gravelling and Construction crews assisting with the application of aggregate products for the gravelling and spot road repair within the County of Lethbridge. Operate rubber-tired loader at Lethbridge County gravel pits and yards for loading aggregate and for snow removal during winter season. Must be able to perform and maintain a route for snow plowing and sanding during the winter season. Assist in the training of small equipment operation as required. Must be available during the winter season for Stand By and Call-In shifts as required by weather conditions. Inspect roads regularly and report maintenance needs or hazardous conditions. Conduct daily inspections and provide basic daily maintenance and servicing of equipment. Perform minor repairs on equipment to ensure optimal functionality. Work collaboratively with other public works personnel to complete road construction and maintenance projects. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and County policies while operating equipment. Respond to emergency road maintenance requests such as snow removal, washouts, and hazardous road conditions. Document work completed, including time, materials used, and road conditions. Participate in operator evaluations to determine competency level on various equipment. Accurate record keeping of daily records, reports, and timesheets. Actively participate in Lethbridge County's Health and Safety program. Attend training sessions specific to the operational needs of Lethbridge County. Some overtime required by the department to accomplish tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Follow OHS requirements, municipal bylaws, County policies, directives, and procedures. Assist with other operations as required and/or instructed.

Education/Training/Skills Required



Valid Class 1 Drivers License with air brake endorsement required. Experience to safely and competently operate Semi Trailer Truck and Rubber-Tired Loader. Must be able to operate Tandem Truck with Sanding and Plowing equipment. Experience in Gravelling as it pertains to Lethbridge County, including spot road repair and dust control programs as well as other various projects within the Public Operations Department. A satisfactory 5-year driver's abstract required. Grade 12 diploma or GED certificate. Previous equipment operation experience in areas including road or general construction, base stabilization or dust control. Required experience and knowledge in operating various light equipment including hand and power tools. Ability to work independently, follow directions and use sound judgment. Strong manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and ability to lift 50kgs on occasion. WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, TDG, H2S Alive, ICS 100 are considered assets. Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and workplace safety best practices. Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office suite. Understand Lethbridge County and the Alberta Township System (ATS) road network an asset. Ability to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Working Conditions



Work is primarily performed outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow. Exposure to dust, noise, vibrations, and other environmental factors associated with road maintenance. Frequent sitting and operating heavy equipment for extended periods. Occasional lifting of heavy materials and manual labor is required. Availability for overtime, including evenings, weekends, and emergency callouts as needed.
