Earth Sciences and Engineering (ESE) specializes in site planning, spatial information and digital terrain modeling, surface and subsurface investigations, rock mechanics, underground structures, geotechnical laboratory services, flood forecasting and water resource management through our geotechnical, hydrotechnical, and civil site development expertise.
Intermediate Civil Engineer
Hatch has an opportunity for an Intermediate Civil Engineer to work on several ongoing projects out of our St. John\'s, Newfoundland office.
The successful candidate will perform general civil engineering and design activities involving site preparation, grading, drainage, roads, paving, etc. for mining, heavy industrial, rail projects and more.

Key Responsibilities:
Earthworks design
Site grading design
Drainage design, storm sewers design, and stormwater management
Roads geometric design and pavement design.
Sanitary sewers design
Hydrology and hydraulics
Open channel and culvert design
Proposal, Technical Specification and Technical memo/report writing
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Leading the civil team members through to completion of assigned projects in areas of bulk earthworks, site drainage, mine and plant roads and earth and mine tailings structures design
QA/QC of design calculations and contract documents
Assuming responsibilities of discipline practice on assigned
project scope
Working collaboratively with the project managers and multi-discipline design teams
Quality control - Drawing and calculations checking and verification
Mentoring young engineers
Candidates may need to be available for travel to site and other offices when necessary
Ensure civil design work is being executed in accordance with the design intent, criteria and regulations shown on civil concept drawings and specifications and/or project scopes.
Support field engineering to ensure the design intent is conveyed to the contractors.
Provide technical support to field engineering (as required) for engineering requirements, risk assessments, dispute resolution, filed Request for Information (RFI\'s), commissioning, etc.
Preferred Software skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
InRoads/Openroads, Microstation, AutoCAD and Civil 3D software skills are considered an asset but not required
What you bring to the role:
The ideal candidate will be a licensed engineer with a degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized engineering program, in addition to having more than 5+ years of relevant industry experience. The attributes most sought after in this position are:
Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized engineering University
5+ years of relevant industry experience
Registered as a P.Eng.
Thorough understanding of the design process including the application of civil design software packages
Previous design and construction site experience in mass/detailed earthworks, site grading, storm drainage, access roads, sewers, and earth structures for large projects
Ability to deal with competing priorities and manage time appropriately
Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, self-motivated, quick to deliver and a team player
Effective communication skills as the candidate will have to coordinate and communicate with multi-discipline teams and clients as well as team working under his/her supervision.
Must be a leader and able to guide and lead a team of engineers and designers to deliver high quality work.
Good communication skills are most desirable. The candidate will have to coordinate and communicate with multi-discipline teams and clients as well as team working under his/her supervisions.
Must be familiar with reading terrain maps/models and contours.
