This position is responsible for the provision of early intervention and outreach services to youth as identified in the Provincial Policy Framework for Mental Health and Addictions and related strategies. Early intervention refers to measures taken for populations identified as being at risk for or already engaged in harmful behaviours or practices. Outreach refers to services that actively "reach out" and provide help to those who would not otherwise look for support in the community. The incumbent works in consultation with the Team Leader and Regional Manager/Director, as well as Mental Health and Addictions Counsellors.This position meets and converses with youth in their settings and demonstrates a non-judgmental attitude in responding to youths\' perspectives and choices. S/he educates youth on specific health risks associated with substance use and sexual practices, screens for potential problem substance use and mental health concerns and links youth with services that address basic needs, such as shelter, food and clothing or health care. The Child Youth Care Worker assists youth in navigating the system and understanding referral processes, accompanies youth to preliminary appointments with health care and other service providers, and provides supportive counselling services through brief interventions. S/he establishes and maintains partnerships with youth-serving agencies and community groups, and performs other related duties as required.Job Demands

Regularly lifts/moves objects/files up to 10 lbs. and occasionally moves/lifts objects in excess of 50 lbs.
Visual concentration (i.e. conducting security and monitoring of young people; observing non-verbal cues and behaviours, etc.), auditory concentration and strain (i.e. active listening) and other sensory concentration (i.e. using sense of smell to detect drugs, tobacco use, alcohol, or possible fire).Job Qualifications
Successful completion of a recognized two-year Child and Youth Care diploma program or a Bachelor\'s Degree in Social Sciences is required. A Bachelor\'s Degree in Child and Youth Care is preferred.
Specialized training in addictions, mental health and motivational interviewing would be an asset.
A valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Driver\'s License and use of a personal vehicle is required.
