What will you do?
Provide operational supervision and direction to a work unit of 10-18 Safety Codes Officers and clerical employees
Oversee all staffing initiatives for the unit, including recruitment, hiring, and comprehensive training
Contribute technical expertise to the development and refinement of operational requirements and performance standards
Manage and monitor team performance, providing ongoing feedback, coaching, and implementing performance improvement plans as necessary
Authorize work assignments, vacation, time-off, and overtime for direct reports
Coach and mentor staff in the application of applicable safety codes and the interpretation of policies and procedures
Monitor and track the work unit's progress and performance against established operational requirements and standards
Ensure and report on the work unit's adherence to the Quality Management Plan and Safety Codes Act
Implement changes to relevant codes (e.g., Alberta Building Code, National Electrical Code, National Plumbing Code) and train staff on their impact
Receive, investigate, and resolve complaints in accordance with standard operating procedures
Communicate requirements to internal and external stakeholders, including industry and regulatory bodies
Liaise with counterparts in other municipalities to gain broader perspectives and foster internal discussions on code practices
Engage with leads from other City teams for strategic planning and project support
Qualifications
:Provincial Journeyman certificate for Plumbing and Gas in the province of Alberta
5+ years of experience related to plumbing, gas, building, construction, or safety code permitting and inspections
5+ years of progressively responsible supervisory/management experience leading diverse teams
Safety Codes Council accreditation in the Plumbing & Gas disciplines
Skills required for success:
Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and mentor teams, and effectively manage staff performance
Proficiency in interpreting and applying regulations from various safety codes and acts, including the Alberta Safety Codes Act and national plumbing/gas codes
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and rationalize solutions to staff and customers
Excellent customer service, negotiation, mediation, and communication skills (verbal and written) to support diverse stakeholders

Salary:
$105,668.31 - $132,083.940 (Annually)
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) is required, and personal transportation for City business may be necessary; obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit may also be a requirement
Hire is dependent on Criminal Records Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
