What qualifications are we looking for?

Post-secondary degree in accounting required, CPA designation strongly preferred
Extensive accounting experience with a minimum of 5 years of full cycle accounting experience, demonstrating strong technical skills
Evidence of a clear Police Information Check, within the last six months
Must have a valid driver's license with class 07 automobile insurance coverage for business use (or pleasure with occasional business use) and a minimum of $2,000,000 in liability coverage
Knowledge & Skills
Experience with not-for-profit and charity restricted fund accounting
Knowledge of QBO accounting software and Avanti payroll software is an asset
Knowledge of the Salesforce platform is an asset
Experience preparing and managing multi-department budgets
Complete understanding of GST and Canadian payroll procedures
Ability to manage the integration of multiple software systems

What does this role look like at the YMCA of Southeastern Alberta?
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This role is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, including budgeting, financial reporting, cash flow management, and compliance. The CFO provides strategic financial leadership to support the YMCA's mission and long-term sustainability, ensuring sound fiscal stewardship and alignment with organizational goals. This position also plays a critical role in risk management, financial planning, and guiding investment decisions, while fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement across the finance function.
The responsibilities and duties of this role will include but is not limited to:
Customer Service
Act as the main point of contact for the Finance Department, answering questions and responding to inquiries as needed
Lead the finance team in providing excellent customer service to assist YMCA customers with issues related to their accounts
Respond to all phone calls/emails within 24 business hours
When responding to the office doorbell, greet visitors professionally and courteously

Collaborate with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team to ensure the Association's strategic objectives are met through prudent financial management and responsible fiscal oversight
Lead a high-performance finance team, including all HR functions and direct supervision of Accounting Manager, Accounting Assistants, and any grant-funded accounting summer positions

Delegate appropriate tasks to team members, ensuring that all tasks are completed accurately, efficiently, and by required deadlines
Lead special projects related to the finance department as needed such as new software implementation or integrations
Participate actively in YMCA Canada's Finance Community of Practice, attending in-person meetings and conferences as directed by the CEO. Travel to these events may involve various modes of transportation, including driving, shuttle services, taxi, or air travel

Attend Board of Directors meetings and Annual General Meeting, as directed by the CEO

Knowledge of how finance impacts all departments with a solid understanding of operational processes across the organization
Overall management and administration of accounting software, including acting as liaison with company as needed
Act as Admin User in Avocado for all finance-related functions with the ability to manage appropriate integrations and use the system to its fullest capabilities
Demonstrated ability to assess and identify inefficiencies within financial and operational processes, and implement strategic improvements to enhance effectiveness and performance
Establish, implement, and oversee internal control processes related to the Association's financial systems
Design and prepare accurate financial statements, analytical reports, variance analyses, forecasts, and grant-related documentation in accordance with required deadlines, ensuring all materials are reviewed with the CEO and General Managers for completeness and accuracy
Lead the planning and forecasting processes, including the development and ongoing maintenance of a multi-year cash flow analysis, updated quarterly to support informed financial decision-making and long-term sustainability
Manage and/or execute journal entries, revenue and expense reviews, and financial reporting.
Monitor and process bank transactions related to insurance, investments, capital assets, and grant funding.
Oversee accounts payable and receivable functions, including payment processing, accruals, collections, and reconciliations across all departments.
Supervise monthly bank deposits, credit card reconciliations, and deferred revenue and general ledger account reconciliations.
Ensure timely and accurate processing of scheduled membership and program fee payments
Bi-weekly payroll approval and submission to the bank by the deadline
Manage the Association's Chart of Accounts, updating it as required
Collaborate with the CEO and General Managers to develop the Association's annual operating and capital budgets, including creating tools and delivering training to strengthen managerial budgeting and financial management capacity.
Navigate financial challenges such as economic downturns or cash flow issues, developing contingency plans and maintaining the organization's financial resilience
Compliance with Legislation and YMCA Policies and Procedures
Ensure the Association's finance department complies with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for non-profit/charitable organizations
Ensure compliance with all CRA legislative requirements, including GST filing, statutory remittances, charitable donations, and grants
Work with People & Culture to ensure T4s are generated and submitted by the required deadline.
Support the CEO and audit team in ensuring Annual Charities Return and Societies Return are submitted by government deadlines
Lead the annual audit process by preparing all required documentation in collaboration with the external audit team. Ensure timely implementation of all recommendations outlined in the final audit report and management letter
Manage all grant funds held in the Association's bank accounts, ensuring expenditures align with funding agreements. Track grant-related spending and prepare accurate financial reports in compliance with contract requirements and submission deadlines
Ensure compliance with Imagine Canada Standards related to financial management
Uphold transparency and ethical standards in financial reporting and decision-making
Serve as a steward for the organization's financial integrity
Adapt to evolving regulatory environments and market conditions
Work Environment and Demands
Office located on the main floor, with 5 steps required to gain entrance (an alternative entry without stairs is available)
Sitting at a desk and using a computer for most of the day
From time to time, may need to lift boxes of files weighing up to 20 lbs
May be exposed to all weather conditions when walking outside to/from bank or vehicle.
May be exposed to all weather conditions when using vehicle for occasional business purposes (e.g., dropping a parcel off at the post office, going to a meeting at another YMCA facility, etc.).
