Job Overview


The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) reports to the CEO and conducts their work with the strictest attention to confidentiality. The CFO leads the financial services, capital infrastructure and risk management for Shepherds of Good Hope (SGH) and Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation (SGHF) and works directly and primarily with Executive Leadership Team, Senior Managers and Board members. Sound judgement, attention to detail, tact, empathy, high moral and ethical standards and exceptional interpersonal skills are essential. The CFO must be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels, both internally and externally. The CFO operates in an environment in which discretion and sound judgement are expected at all times.

Responsibilities



Oversees activities of the finance department, who process all financial transactions, payroll and benefit administration, and produce draft monthly and annual financial reports. Makes recommendations for improvement, as required. Reviews and presents monthly and annual financial reports for the Executive and Senior leadership teams. Develops support materials such as financial models and budgets for the CEO and executive leadership team for annual approval. Develops support materials such as financial models and budgets for SGH Foundation and its fund-raising activities. Manages cash effectively, providing rolling cash flow forecast updates - quarterly at a minimum, or more frequently as required. Negotiates contracts with various stakeholders, managing these relationships, and coordinating any requirement for review by outside legal counsel. Manages relationships with audit firms for annual audit and income tax activities and managing sales tax/employment matters. Ensures all statutory remittances are filed accurately and on time. Ensures the finance and executive teams are briefed and knowledgeable about pertinent issues related to charitable status, the CRA Fundraising Guidance and other relevant issues that fall under the federal Charities Directorate Reviews financial, operational, and administrative systems and policies, and recommending changes and improvements as the organization grows. Supports the Executive leadership team with business analyses, opportunities and strategy. Lead the development and execution of the organization's capital planning strategy, aligned with long-term mission and objectives. Provide vision and oversight for major infrastructure projects (new builds, renovations, property acquisitions). Serve as the executive lead for asset management, ensuring optimal use, maintenance, and sustainability of all facilities. Partner with the Board, CEO, and other executives to ensure capital and infrastructure decisions align with strategic priorities. Oversee capital budgets, project funding strategies, and financial controls for major building initiatives. Manage relationships with architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants to ensure quality, cost, and schedule targets are met. Implement preventive maintenance programs and ensure compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards. Develop and oversee the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework for operational, financial, legal, and reputational risks. Ensure risk assessments are integrated into capital project planning and infrastructure maintenance. Lead business continuity planning, disaster recovery, and emergency preparedness for physical assets. Maintain compliance with applicable laws, building codes, and regulatory requirements. Provide regular reports to the Board of Directors and senior leadership on capital projects, infrastructure status, and risk profiles. Develop policies and procedures to ensure transparency and accountability in capital spending. Act as the executive liaison to Board committees focused on capital, infrastructure, or risk.

QUALIFICATIONS



Master's degree, preferably in Commerce, Accounting, Finance or a comparable field. Must hold an accounting designation (CPA, CA preferred). Minimum of 10 years of experience in finance/accounting management. Minimum of 10 years' experience working in a not-for-profit organization, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior management operational role. Must be an energized, dynamic, empathetic leader and team player who inspires and motivates people. Ability to understand high level, strategic goals and directions and work collaboratively in the best interests of the organization to provide appropriate services to the homeless and vulnerably housed in Ottawa. Adheres to the highest ethical standards. Leader who prioritizes the stewardship of a values-based organization whose people are its greatest assets. Skilled problem-solver whose creative thinking fosters innovation and enhances the organization's reputation as a leader in harm reduction in our community. Innovative thinker with strong organizational skills. Has the ability to make difficult decisions while maintaining solid "people skills" and displaying a high degree of emotional intelligence. Ability to set priorities and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Strong attention to detail. Advanced skills in computer systems including Microsoft Office (outlook, word, excel, etc.). Demonstrate in depth knowledge of risk identification and risk mitigation that are appropriate to use in a complex, service-based environment. Knowledgeable in change management and control methods. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Must by at least 18 years of age. Able to read text and communicate orally in English. Ability to communicate in other languages is considered an asset.

Pay: $96,548.00-$144,823.00 per year
