The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Chief Engineer - LR Mine Infrastructure & System Design to join our Mines Technical Services team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

You will deliver infrastructure designs within the Life of Mine Plan (LoMP) for Vale's North Atlantic Operations. The role holder will identify and advise on risks to each mine plan regarding mine infrastructure system condition and capacity, designs to reduce risk, recommend appropriate technology to optimize the systems; and provide the required analysis, business case(s) and support to operations in achieving their production plan. The role will collaborate with the Central Engineering Group, Principal Engineer-Vent Mechanical, CE-Design Vent Systems, Long Range Mine Design, Mine Operations, Ground Control, Base Metals FEL Studies, Project Engineering, IT/Automation, Asset Integrity, Central Engineering and Reliability.

This role functions as the resource to efficiently handle, coordinate and influence the long range designs for mine infrastructure systems, communicate and obtain alignment on the 5 year and LOM strategy; and contributes by providing specialized design and support to Mine Planning, Mine Operations and Central Long Range Mine Design.

Additionally, in this position you will...

  • Accountable for the safe work of direct reports through safety interactions and the promotion of a safe and healthy working environment; and zero harm through risk reviews with partners of infrastructure designs.
  • Lead and actively demonstrates Vale's behaviors with all partners including employees, contractors, customers and members of the community.
  • Accountable to guide the team design process, recommendations and deliver commitments on schedule through integration of infrastructure designs into the LoMP process, communicate the strategy and support the necessary mine design risk reviews.
  • Accountable to deliver on and guide a team of engineers completing designs while applying good engineering principles, supporting investigations, and solving for mine sites as requested.
  • Co-ordinate with long-range Chief Engineers and Chief Mine Engineers across NA to ensure alignment with the mine plan and schedules such that infrastructure is available to maintain production; and with Asset Integrity and Reliability to establish critical metrics and reporting monthly of critical metrics.
  • Responsible to develop infrastructure strategies and cases that incorporate new technology into the current and long-range designs. including the impact on production/opex/capex.
  • Responsible to maintain VPS Management Routine Agenda and reporting as established, create, and maintain, as required, standards/guidelines for infrastructure design and modeling tools.
  • Provide training and mentoring to foster skills and competencies within the infrastructure team and others as required.
  • Communication of infrastructure issues and recommendations to varying audiences, including mine personnel to senior leadership.
  • Back-fill for Manager- Vent, Infrastructure Design & Tech Support as requested.
About You

Education:
  • Undergraduate degree is required
  • P. Eng. designation is required
  • Undergraduate degree in Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mining is preferred
Skills and Experience:
  • 11-15 years of experience
  • Sound engineering principals, competent knowledge of pumping, dewatering, electrical, compressed air, piping distribution, mechanical, scheduling, and understanding of underground mining activities.
  • Knowledge of modeling software (pumping, electrical, CFD) is recommended.
  • Field data collection experience related to mechanical and electrical performance of equipment and systems.
  • Collaboration, diversity, and active listening.
  • Ability to develop concise documents and presentation materials.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and spreadsheet manipulation in Excel.
  • Be creative, not only use best and past practices but promote new ways of analyzing issues.
