Detailed Overview:

Reporting clinically to the Clinical Practice Leader and administratively to the Manager, Clinical Operations, utilizes clinical knowledge and procedures such as specialized wound care and debridement of soft tissue to provide therapeutic services to the client with hand injuries; conducts comprehensive hand therapy assessments and consultation utilizing an evidence-based approach to clients including planning goals, directing and implementing services using intervention approaches/procedures; evaluates effectiveness of the service and treatment plan and implements changes, as required; maintains client records by including information such as treatment status/options/progress; provides other therapeutic services to the client, as needed and participates in the development, review and promotion of hand therapy services for the assigned program area.
Responsibilities:
Conducts clinical and therapeutic assessments of the client's physical status, functional abilities, needs and goals regarding manual skills specific to hand therapy utilizing an evidence-based approach such as reviewing records, interviewing the patient/client, identifying client and therapist expectations, administering standard tests, determining the appropriate use of assessment tolls, conducting examinations, identifying functional status and monitoring the patient/clients health for any significant change in functional independence to restore, maintain and enhance the client's health and performance. Analyzes the client's therapeutic needs by ensuring the proper application of Standardized Clinical Hand Evaluations to establish the appropriate therapeutic diagnosis and prognosis; plans short and long term individual treatment program by interpreting clinical findings, establishing and prioritizing expected outcomes, discussing treatment options and determining available resources, in collaboration with the client consistent with the client's needs to achieve optimal health outcomes. Implements specific therapeutic treatment programs utilizing diverse intervention approaches and modalities to promote, develop, maintain and/or restore physical performance potential; identifies resources required for treatment such as tests, material and equipment; educates and teaches the client regarding self-management, health promotion and injury prevention such as selecting specialized wound care and debridement of soft tissue, suture removal and managing skills specific to hand therapy and consistent with recognized Hand Therapy protocols. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions by conducting ongoing assessment and monitoring of client responses, evaluating changes in health status, function and physical performance against pre-established outcomes; modifies client intervention strategies to achieve and maintain functional independence and physical performance. Participates in clinical program development and quality improvement activities by providing input related to hand therapy in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards, procedures, assessment forms, patient materials, clinical guidelines, program descriptions and/or audit tools. Prepares and maintains client records by documenting client assessments, interventions, evaluations, treatment modifications and client goals to provide evidence-based rationale to support assessment findings and intervention plans. Contributes to the interdisciplinary approach to client care by collaborating and communicating with physician, other healthcare disciplines, the family and the community regarding client progress, problems and/or related issues such as discharge planning. Roles models and demonstrated hand therapy techniques and practices to staff and students; provides hand therapy information based on application to current theories, concepts and principles; ensures compliance with standards of practice and supports staff to provide excellence in quality client care based on evidence-based practice. Provides direction to designated staff with respect to fabrication of splints/orthotics including assignment of treatment components, where applicable, sticking of splinting supply room and splint room maintenance; provides leadership to students and other designated staff by providing guidance and the opportunity to observe and participate in the treatment of hand therapy clients. Attends meets and client conference and provides feedback to families and other healthcare members regarding the rehabilitation process, treatment options and other related issues. Ensure safety of work and safe use of all treatment equipment; reports equipment malfunctions, as necessary and arranges for equipment maintenance; monitors and controls the level of supplies by completing weekly order book as needed for routine supplies; submits requests for additional supplies to the Manager, Clinical Services or designate as required. Participates in ongoing professional development activities such as attending seminars, reviewing literature and involved in research activities; set measureable goals and objectives and work with the Manage to create a plan for professional development; reviews progress to ensure goals are achieved within established time frames. Participates on internal and external committees regarding hand therapy interventions as a representative for the assigned clinical area, as requested. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training & Experience



Graduation from an approved school of Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy. Two (2) years' recent related clinical experience in Hand Therapy and/or splinting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Certification in Hand Therapy (CHT) through the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC).

Current full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC) and eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists or Physiotherapy Association of BC.

Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice related to Hand Therapy. Demonstrated understanding of the scope and practice of other healthcare disciplines and their role within the healthcare system. Knowledge of bio-mechanical and assistive technology concepts, current trends and practice within a client an family-centered model of care. Demonstrated knowledge of occupational or physical therapy theory and practice as it applies to Hand Therapy. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and revise educational programs. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to plan, problem-solve, organize and prioritize work in a dynamic environment with changing priorities. Ability to teach and facilitate the learning of others. Ability to work independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Ability to develop and maintain rapport with clients, interdisciplinary team members and other stakeholders. Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications. * Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
