The purpose of this nursing position is the provision of nursing and medical services to adult offenders in the Provincial Correctional Centre.
Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting timely offender health assessments and developing appropriate treatment plans and referrals;
  • Providing nursing care based on nursing assessment under medical direction (when necessary) or independently;
  • Evaluating, on an ongoing basis, treatment plans and therapeutic interventions and as necessary reporting findings to other health care providers and/or other PCC staff;
  • Ensuring all activities comply with Community and Correctional Services Policy and Procedures and relevant legislation including the Criminal Code of Canada, Correctional Services Act and Regulations, Registered Nurses Act, Narcotic Control Act, Mental Health Act, Public Health Act and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, regulations and policies;
  • Administering medications and carrying out treatments/procedures; gathering body fluid specimens for testing as ordered;
  • Assessing offenders on dental, eye care, and general health; notifying Floor Supervisor of medical appointments for transportation purposes;
  • Providing supportive counseling to offenders, as required;
  • Participating in overall case management activities and case conferences, as required;
  • Coordinating physician institutional visits and subsequent follow up physician orders, if applicable;
  • Maintaining client medical files in accordance with standard practice, policy, and legislative requirements;
  • Making arrangements/requisitions for offender transportation to hospital, as required;
  • Arranging for hospital admissions when indicated by preparing hospital documentation, pre-admission tests;
  • Communicating all relevant information to Unit, Floor, and/or Casework Supervisors;
  • Advising PCC and PRCC nursing staff and Centre physicians of relevant information;
  • Acting as preceptor/mentor to students as part of their clinical placement; Identifying health related educational needs of offenders and, in collaboration with others, setting priorities and arranging for resources to be directed to meeting those needs;
  • Participating in the planning and implementation of health promotion activities for both offenders and PCC staff; and
  • Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Nursing diploma and/or degree in Nursing and relevant nursing experience (such as mental health and addictions).
  • Knowledge in suicide prevention, chemical dependency, family violence, and non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills within the team; proven ability to work independently.
  • The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory criminal record check prior to beginning employment.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certificate.
  • Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island.
  • Must have a good previous work and attendance record.
