The Early Childhood Education Assistant (ECE Assistant) will provide a nurturing and safe environment for children to develop and reach age-appropriate milestones. The ECE Assistant assists program staff to provide support and direct care to children between the ages of birth to 12 years, including special needs children or infants and toddlers. The ECE Assistant will engage children in activities by telling stories, singing songs, doing crafts, and playing alongside them to stimulate and develop their intellectual, physical, and emotional growth. They will tend to the needs of the children in their care, including comforting them and feeding young infants.

This is a casual position, therefore hours per week are dependant on program schedule and needs. This position will report to both the Program Manager and Assistant Program Manager.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:



1. Adheres to the policies and standards of KARA Family Resource Centre, as established in policy and program manuals, Health & Safety Guidelines, job descriptions, written memos, and verbal agreements.

2. Assists program staff in caring for and monitoring children in indoor and outdoor activities and during rest periods.

3. Assists in planning, preparing, and carrying out developmentally appropriate programs and activities.

4. Conducts activities with children on an individual and group basis to promote the development of physical, cognitive, emotional, and cognitive skills.

5. Participates in planning and evaluation of programs and provides recommendations for change to supervisor.

6. Attends to children's physical needs, which may include diapering, toileting, eating, and sleeping.

7. Administers first aid in accordance with established policy.

8. Maintains records, reports problems or concerns to senior staff.

9. Keeps program facilities and equipment safe and clean, creating a healthy and safe environment in which children can interact. Identifies, removes, and reports any repairs and concerns to program staff.

10. Communicates with families about children's experience in program.

11. Follow written and verbal directives from the immediate supervisor, executive director, or designate.

12. Follow the Child Abuse Protocol and the General Safety Guidelines.

13. Performs all other duties, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:



Education, Training and Experience:



Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent. Alberta Child Care Orientation Course Certificate. A combination of education, training and experience in a related field will be considered. Current Level I First Aid certificate. Food Safe an asset. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Excellent organizational skills. Experience working with parents and children. Group facilitation experience. Cultural sensitivity training and/or experience working with culturally diverse populations. Experience working in a not for profit, human services agency an asset.

Must demonstrate an ability to implement age-appropriate activities for children and develop program related reference and resource materials. Must be sensitive to and respectful of cultural and lifestyle diversity. Proficient in both oral and written communication. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently, set priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines. Commitment to a problem-solving approach. Represent the agency in a positive and professional manner when in contact with outside agencies, professionals, or community. Be non-judgmental, respectful, supportive, and empowering. Demonstrated effectiveness as part of a staff team. Commitment to a problem-solving approach. Ability to identify sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality. Have no relevant criminal history.
