Position Type / Hours:

Full-Time Permanent, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, 40 hours weekly

Annual Competition:

$32.86 to $34.85 per hour, as per collective agreement

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Facilities Services-Building and Site Services, the Carpenter performs a wide variety of duties related to the repair, maintenance, installation, and construction of the interior and exterior of school structures and other Board facilities, school fixtures and equipment, school grounds, and associated items as they apply to the carpentry trade. The incumbent ensures that school buildings and Board facilities are in a proper state of repair.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:



Understands, complies with, contributes to, and participates in Board policies and procedures. Repairs the structures of school buildings in accordance with work orders to ensure that all buildings are in a proper state of repair. Reads instructions, interprets and assesses work order requests, construction plans, drawings, and sketches. Constructs, repairs, and installs Board furniture, interior millwork, cupboards, shelving, countertops, and cabinets from raw materials as requested through work orders. Selects appropriate materials, wood, wood substitutes, plastic laminates, veneers, hardware, and other associated materials, and utilizes appropriate carpentry techniques, equipment, and tools within schools and Board facilities. Performs mathematical calculations to ensure precise construction and economic use of material. Measures, cuts, constructs, alters, repairs, maintains, installs, assembles, and dismantles building architectural components made of wood, wood substitute, laminates, acrylics, glass, metal, drywall, and associated hardware in accordance with calculated measurements and predetermined specifications. Selects, prepares, operates, maintains, and performs minor repairs to hand tools and power tools, stationary machines, and other related equipment. Assists and/or trains other staff in their proper and safe use. Ensures work is complete and labor and materials are documented where applicable for costing to appropriate accounts. Maintains and monitors work area, equipment, and working environments regularly to maintain a safe and hazard- free workplace. Performs minor glazing and caulking, and metal siding required for door and window installation. Removes, repairs, and replaces damaged flooring, ceramic tiles, vinyl composite tiles, vinyl/rubber baseboard, carpet, sheet flooring, and rotting wood floors. Removes, repairs, alters, erects, and rebuilds walls and ceilings including but not limited to the framing, insulation, drywall, taping, and sanding Installs, repairs, and replaces doors, locks, crash bars, panic bars, and all associated hardware in Board facilities. Performs minor masonry repairs to brickwork, blockwork, and concrete. Repairs and replaces roofing and associated accessories including but not limited to metal flashing, vents, fascia, and eavestrough/gutter systems. Sets up and uses scaffolding as needed. Performs any of the above repair duties in response to emergency calls so as to ensure safety, minimize disruption, and maintain the security of the Board's facilities. Performs general repairs on all other related areas not specified above. Provides input to the Facilities Services Department for the development and continued updating of the preventive maintenance programs for all Board facilities. Is responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the assigned Board vehicle and ensures the vehicle is kept clean, as well as advises the Supervisor of any mechanical deficiencies. Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Maintenance Services.

Required Skills and Qualifications:



The successful candidate will bring the following skills and experiences to the role:

Possesses a valid General Carpenter trade certificate issued by the Ontario Ministry of Training or an equivalent Canadian inter-provincial license. Holds a valid Ontario Driver's Licence. Has a minimum grade 12 secondary school education or equivalent combination of education and experience. Has good oral and written communication in English. Has three (3) years experience in general carpentry, construction or related industry, or minimum three (3) years experience in construction or maintenance of timber-framed buildings. Has good working knowledge and understanding of building maintenance, the carpentry trade in general carpentry, construction or related industry trades including rough carpentry, finished carpentry, and cabinet construction, millwork or maintenance of timber-framed buildings. Has sound knowledge of general construction codes and regulations. Has knowledge of the "Occupational Health and Safety Act."

Working Conditions:



Ability to work alone in a self-managing role or in a team environment. Works indoors and outdoors in an environment that may be characterized by excessive exposure to a wide range of environmental conditions such as heat, dust, noise, fumes, and changes in temperature and weather. Required to work at heights. Required to work alone in a self-managing role or in a team environment.
