Summary

Within the context of a client-centred model of care, and within the mission, vision, values and strategic direction of the organization, the Cardiology Technologist conducts various diagnostic tests such as Electrocardiogram, standard and nuclear testing, Holter monitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and analyzes the results and summarizes the interpretation by medical staff in and research and clinical care environment. This position also involves variations of standard exercise testing protocols, for both clinical and athletic patients.

This role involves administrative duties, research assistance and offsite visits. This position may require travel around British Columbia to assist with screenings.This position will require some evening and weekend work

Organizational Status

The Cardiac Technologist will primarily work with patients, medical doctors, research staff, administrative staff, cardiovascular technicians, and liaise with other healthcare professionals. In addition the Cardiac Technologist will be responsible for training other cardiac technologists, including volunteer undergraduate students and co-op students.

Work Performed

- Conduct electrocardiogram (EKG), phonocardiogram, echocardiogram, stress testing, or other cardiovascular tests to record patients cardiac activity, using specialized electronic test equipment, recording devices, or laboratory instruments.
- Explain testing procedures to patients to obtain cooperation and reduce anxiety.
- Monitor patients blood pressure and heart rate using electrocardiogram (EKG) equipment during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures to notify the physician if something appears wrong.
- Obtain and record patient identification, medical history, or test results.
- Monitor patients comfort and safety during tests, alerting physicians to abnormalities or changes in patient responses.
- Prepare and position patients for testing.
- Attach electrodes to the patients chests, arms, and legs, connect electrodes to leads from the electrocardiogram (EKG) machine, and operate the EKG machine to obtain a reading.
- Adjust equipment and controls according to physicians orders or established protocol.
- Check, test, and maintain cardiology equipment, making minor repairs when necessary, to ensure proper operation.
- Supervise or train other cardiology technologists or students.
- Compare measurements of heart wall thickness and chamber sizes to standard norms to identify abnormalities.
- Observe ultrasound display screen and listen to signals to record vascular information, such as blood pressure, limb volume changes, oxygen saturation, or cerebral circulation.
- Transcribe, type, and distribute reports of diagnostic procedures for interpretation by physician.
- Enter factors
- Conduct tests of pulmonary system, using spirometer or other respiratory testing equipment.
- Set up 24-hour Holter and event monitors, scan and interpret tapes, and report results to physicians.
- Perform general administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments or ordering supplies or equipment.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

- Patient results may be jeopardized if testing not conducted according to SOP
- Patient safety may be jeopardized if set up, testing and protocol is not followed and may result in injury, even death
- Patient safety and results may be affected if equipment is not being maintained and calibrated
- Patient results may be jeopardized if proper test identification is not complete
- Patient confidentiality can be compromised if files are not kept secure
- An error within the realm of a research study may result in biased or incomplete data and skewed study results
- Any procedure or data record as part of the project must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed
- An error in scheduling study subject visits may result in a protocol deviation/violation or inadequate follow-up care, potentially resulting in participant harm
- Clinical mistakes made by the Cardiac Technologist could be threatening to patients; patient safety must be maintained through careful attention to detail and adherence to study protocols

- An error in the collection and storage of study documentation could result in records being rendered insufficient, requiring repeat collection or loss of irreplaceable data
- Lack of attention to regulatory guidelines and approvals can lead to suspension of further clinical research and/or funding for the research group

Supervision Received

The Cardiac Technologist will be accountable to the Medical Director, Research Director and The Operations Director of SportsCardiologyBC to fulfill all responsibilities.

Supervision Given

The Cardiac Technologist will not supervise any other team members; however, will support, assist, and aid in training cardiac technologists, students, and administrative assistants and where appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute.Diploma in Cardiology Technology.Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Membership in Sports or Exercise bodies (ACSM, CSEP or similar) is an asset. General interest in sports and physical activities. General interest in health and nutrition. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in multi-disciplinary team settings. Demonstrated ability to assist with research procedures such as data collection and data entry. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment. Demonstrated ability to be organized. Demonstrated ability to work with researchers in various fields and adapt stress testing protocols accordingly. Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to communicate and deal effectively with study participants and clinic patients. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with a multi-disciplinary team including physicians, researchers, allied health professionals, and students. Demonstrated ability to work in a student-centered environment, such as demonstrating exercise protocols. Physical ability to perform duties of the position. Knowledge in Microsoft office - Excel, PowerPoint, Word. Class 5 license and access to vehicle
