Role Overview:
As Camp Manager at Scouts Canada, this role is central to transforming key properties into a vibrant, high-impact center for outdoor learning, community engagement, and revenue generation.
Focused on increasing property usage, boosting unrestricted income, and enhancing program quality, the Camp Manager leads the strategic and operational efforts that make the camp a destination of choice for Scouting groups, schools, third-party users, and corporate partners. They deliver relevant, high-quality programming aligned to Scouts Canada's educational framework while ensuring safe, well-maintained facilities and excellent customer service.
By managing budgets effectively, pursuing new partnerships and fundraising opportunities, and collaborating across departments, the Camp Manager drives sustainable growth and long-term value. With strong leadership of staff teams and deep engagement with volunteers and committees, this role ensures the camp delivers not only on logistics but on Scouts Canada's broader mission to help young people develop skills for life.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Operations:
Ensure camps are able to operate effectively through appropriate maintenance, staffing and customer service.
Revenue and usage:
Increase unrestricted net revenue through effective marketing, financial strategy, reporting and control, fundraising or partnership opportunities in collaboration with other Scouts Canada teams.
Program:
Deliver program offerings based on customer demand (Alignment to Scouts Canada frameworks or training, Seasonal camps or challenges, third-party and corporate offerings, etc.).
Safety:
Ensure local compliance and reporting with all regulatory and safety obligations.
Other duties:
As assigned.
Externality:
Represent the organization to external stakeholders, agents, consultants and agencies.
Health and Safety:
Provide leadership in the workplace to ensure alignment with Health and Safety legislation and regulations
People:
Continuously improve the performance of your staff, while ensuring a positive growth culture that results in increased satisfaction from high-performing staff, and swiftly addresses performance concerns.
Volunteers:
Continuously improve partnerships between staff and volunteers, including Council Key 3s, Camp Committees and Property Societies. Support volunteer Camp Committee recruitment, succession planning and conflict resolution.
User Centered:
Collect and share evidence related to volunteer and customer satisfaction with their experience of Camps, and volunteers confidence and ability to deliver outdoor education activities, to lead to more effective decision making and the prioritization of relevant user needs.
Project Management:
Effectively and objectively report progress for all projects within the team against Scope, Timeline and Budget.
Budget:
Effectively manage and report on <$1M team and project budgets.
Fundraising:
Collaborate with fundraising colleagues to secure and manage externally funded partnerships
Revenue:
Generate an unrestricted net surplus, aligned to annual targets.
Business planning:
Support the Associate Director (Business Development) in developing a multi-year business plan with a focus on sustainable growth and a net positive financial outcome.
Capital reinvestment planning:
Support the Associate Director (Risk and Asset Management) in developing a long-term capital reinvestment plan by evaluating long-term asset needs and aligning investment strategies with strategic priorities.
Qualifications and Job-Specific Competencies:
3+ years related experience in one of the following areas: camp management, business development or outdoor adventure delivery
Post-secondary qualification or equivalent combination of education and work experience in outdoor education, business management, non-profit management, education or volunteer management.
Outdoor Education:
Ability to design and deliver camp programs, including outdoor education, leadership training, and recreational activities.
Partnerships:
Ability to identify and develop partnerships and sponsorship to support camp operations and growth.
Business insight:
Knows best practices in the delivery of outdoor and residential experiences, and related asset management. Keeps up with current and future policies, practices and trends in the marketplace.
Health and Safety:
Knows all health and safety legislation related to the operation of outdoor and residential settings, and is able to keep up to date with any changes and implement necessary operational updates as a result.
Risk Management:
Ability to identify, mitigate or escalate risks across a portfolio of outdoor education/residential settings.
Seasonal Staffing:
Ability to effectively recruit and lead large numbers of seasonal workers.
Technical Proficiency:
Strong computer and technical skills and a growth-mindset when approaching new technology, including proficiency with Microsoft 365 / Office applications
Travel:
Must hold a valid Canadian driver's license or have equivalent ability to travel.
Working Conditions:
Works on-site at a camp setting. Hybrid options are possible depending on operational needs.
Indoor and outdoor camp work setting during all seasons.
Regular working hours - some evenings or weekends will be required.
Some travel may be required depending on operational needs (< 10%)
PRC (Police Record Check) and VSS (Vulnerable Sector Check) are required before the start date.
Mandatory training requirement.
