The Summer Camp Leader is responsible for the supervision and support of Summer Camp Assistants in the provision of L'Arche Antigonish's Summer Camp for young people with intellectual disabilities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide respectful and high-quality direct care supports in areas including, personal care needs, medication - as per direction of the person being supported, their with family and/or other support networks, and as directed by the Program Coordinator.
Keep up-to-date and accurate records in all areas as directed: financial, medical, daily journals, medication, etc.
Prepare for and lead regular and consistent schedule of individual supervisory meetings, team meetings, and other meetings to facilitate the planning of the Summer Camp and its activities.
Collaborate with the Summer Assistants to complete regular tasks to ensure the smooth running of the Summer Camp - including shopping for supplies, booking vehicles, purchasing materials, etc.
Adhere to all policies, guidelines, regulations, and safety and emergency procedures of the local L'Arche community and government bodies and ensure Counsellors adhere to the same.
Model safe manual handling and ensure Summer Camp Assistants follow safe manual handling practices.
Provide training as required to Summer Camp Assistants around the needs of the young people with intellectual disabilities attending L'Arche Antigonish's Summer Camp.
Be in regular communication with the Program Coordinator Assistant as regards live issues or particular support required for the smooth running of the Summer Camp.
Provide flexible support responding to Campers' needs and our scheduling requirements.
Participate in training programs as required or directed by L'Arche Antigonish.
Work closely and communicate effectively with family members and other support networks of campers, ensuring communication is timely and respectful.
Communicate with Program Coordinator or designate on a weekly basis.
Ensures volunteers and visitors have a meaningful engagement with the summer camp.
Ensures the stewardship of camp location, vehicles, and equipment
Qualifications, Skills Needed and Position Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent
Fluent in spoken and written English
Nova Scotia Driver Licence
Clear police check including vulnerable sector screening
CPR & First Aid certification or training
At least 18 years of age
Knowledgeable about L'Arche history, values and vision and a desire to actively integrate these values into the support of all community members.
Ability to take direction and follow-through on commitments in timely fashion
Previous experience in Summer Camps or L'Arche Antigonish's Summer Camp an asset
This role involves manual handling - ability to lift up to 25kg
Fully vaccinated with at least two doses of a Health Canada approved COVID-19 Vaccine
Working conditions and Physical Environment
Working both inside and outside with travel to other locations to access activities
Working in hot environments from time to time related to outside summer temperatures
* Working in noisy conditions from time to time related to the activities that people will be engaging in and from time to time people being upset or in distress.
