Nature of the Position

Under the general direction of the Chef Building Official, the Bylaw Enforcement Officer I receives, verifies and investigates bylaw complaints and infractions, reviews businesses for conformance to the business licensing bylaw and functions as animal control officer.

Essential Competencies

Enforcement courses such as Justice Institute of British Columbia J1 or equivalent, a valid Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License with clean abstract, and a minimum of 5 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in bylaw enforcement, policing, or the investigative/protective services field.

The successful applicant will investigate bylaw complaints and infractions and ensure business operate in compliance with all District of Sechelt bylaws, as well as assess complaints to determine whether a bylaw has been infracted, and provide written communication relating to bylaw infractions and compliance. The Bylaw Enforcement Officer will initiate enforcement to address the violation related to the bylaw, which may include the issuing of tickets, facilitate compliance with a bylaw.

Preferred competencies for the role include a calm demeanor and strong communication and organizational skills. Other requirements include the ability effectively prioritize workload and exercise sound judgement. The successful applicant will have strong conflict resolution and interpersonal communication skills as well as the ability work well members of the public. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook is required.

Working Conditions

This is a regular, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU. Wage for the position is set at Grid Level 9, $33.24 \xe2\x80\x93 $36.93 per hour, plus an attractive benefits package. The hours of work are 35 hours per week over 4 days per week. Flexibility is required to work evenings and weekends when required.
