Job Description


Winnipeg is a city of approximately 750,000 located on the Red River, 108 kms north of the US border. Being near the centre of Canada, it is a major transportation centre. The city\'s population is fairly diverse, representing people from many different cultures. Most of the people are English speaking with French, Filipino and Chinese being other predominant languages. There are about 65,000 First Nations people living in Winnipeg.

There are almost 50 Mennonite churches in Winnipeg, which is home to about 30,000 Mennonites. Winnipeg has two large public liberal arts universities and a Mennonite university (Canadian Mennonite University). There are also two Mennonite private high schools.

Winnipeg temperatures can range from 40\xc2\xb0C (104\xc2\xb0F) in summer to -45\xc2\xb0C (-49\xc2\xb0F) in winter, with average summer temperatures around 25.4\xc2\xb0C (77.7\xc2\xb0F) and average winter temperatures around -12.9\xc2\xb0C (8.8\xc2\xb0F).

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field (social work, human sciences, international development, etc) or equivalent with 2-4 year relevant experience.
  • Demonstrates a strong interest in global and cross-cultural issues,
  • Minimum of two (2) year\'s recent related experience in working with refugees, newcomers with a refugee background and/or current global forced migration issues,
  • Knowledge and/or interest in the Canadian Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program and BVOR Program essential,
  • Excellent and proven collaborative work style,
  • Ability to plan strategically for education and advocacy,
  • Proven ability to research and create presentations,
  • Strong public speaking skills,
  • Well-developed tools for social analysis
  • Strong relational skills with the ability to relate respectfully to people of diverse cultural, religious, and historical backgrounds,
  • Ability to interpret complex and controversial issue to the public with respect and compassion,
  • Solid organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently; take initiative, problem solve and work as part of a team,

Job Synopsis To promote, coordinate and implement all Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba (MCCM) work related to Blended Visa Office Referred (BVOR) program. This position connects with a wide variety of people, groups and supporting constituency in Manitoba as well as with the MCC network of Migration and Resettlement (M & R) provincial programs.

The BVOR Assistant Program Coordinator works closely and collaboratively with the M & R Coordinator and is accountable to the Program Director.

Challenges

Key Responsibilities Refugee Resettlement -30%
  • Take the lead on all issues/questions pertaining to BVOR.
  • Keep records of all cases in progress and be aware of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updates
  • Monitor the integration of newcomers for the full length of sponsorship as per MCCM protocol,
  • Keep records of all cases in progress and provide updates from local IRCC office through different stages of the application process,
  • Monitor the process through interaction with provincial IRCC office, Visa post and other international organizations involved in the resettlement.
  • Support the sponsorship group in preparing for the arrival.
  • Monitor the integration of the family arrival for the full length of sponsorship as per MCCM protocol.
o Quality settlement
o Assist sponsor groups by troubleshooting issues that arise for newcomer families by providing information, resources, and referrals, and providing direct assistance in emergency situations.
  • Follow up visits to BVOR families and sponsorship groups and other related processes.
Constituency Relations - 20%
  • Maintain contacts with congregations invested in sponsorship and other community groups,
  • Maintain the links between sponsors/M & R/BVOR gov\'t agencies,
  • Maintain contacts, especially with inexperienced BVOR sponsorship groups,
  • Encourage and support pre-arrival contact between sponsor, if applicable
Advertising, promoting, and recruiting - 30%
  • Recruit sponsorship groups for BVOR
  • Use of BVOR recruitment resources by MCCC/MCCO to engage constituency/groups,
o Speak to prospective groups in various settings - Adult Ministries, mission/refugee committees/youth groups/school,
o Compile and approve resources, coordinate, and take the lead on orientation for BVOR sponsorship groups,
  • Jointly develop, maintain, and upgrade materials and presentations in collaboration with M&R Coordinator.
Public Engagement - 10%
  • Work with M & R Program Coordinator, Program Director, CDR staff and M & R Program to effectively promote the BVOR program,
o Work collaboratively to generate public events, develop communication materials,
o Creating constituency education events
o Provide general information on BVOR to walk-ins, cold calls, and hold appointments (except during busy seasons)

Other - 10%
  • Participate in M& R network meetings,
  • Maintain interaction with Refugee Sponsorship Training Program and IRCC regarding current refugee issues, regulations, and processed cases,
  • Participate in Program planning (PMER) and budget creation and oversight,
  • Contribute to creating M&R program quarterly reports,
  • Prepare reports for MCC Manitoba and update short and long- term plans for the BVOR program,
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ\'s unconditional love to those with whom you work,
  • Model non-violent peacemaking in the workplace and community through respectful interactions with others.
