The Institute of Islamic Studies at the University of Toronto (IIS) incubates advanced research projects in the study of Islam and Muslims. A collaborative researchspace, the IIS brings together researchers from across disciplines, regional interests, and historical periods. Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Institute\'s Director, the Business Officer is responsible for overseeing the Institute\'s business and financial administration, including budgeting and payroll management of operational, restricted and trust accounts, and endowment annual income disbursements, as well as research grant accounts held in multiple units across the University. The position will also be responsiblefor purchasing and procurement activities, research grant administration as well as administering IIS facilities and equipment and personnel access and usage of facilities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Forecasting, planning and monitoring multiple complex budgets
  • Planning and overseeing short and long range activities that support financial administration
  • Administering accounts for restricted funds
  • Preparing reports on restricted, trust, and endowment accounts for purposes of accountability and review by third party auditors.
  • Liaising with internal and external contacts to facilitate purchasing and/or procurement processes
  • Developing and issuing request for proposals and other tendering documents
  • Developing and maintaining procedures for the use of space and equipment
  • Directing a small group in a limited area, including responsibility for scheduling and/or workflow
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in accounting, financial management, commerce or related disciplines, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years of recent and related experience in accounting and financial administration, preferably in a post-secondary or research-intensive institution.
  • Experience administering a complex work unit with financial management experience including overseeing, planning and preparing complex operating budgets and research grants; forecasting, managing, and analyzing budgets and statistical information; reporting, monitoring and reconciling financial activity and payroll distribution, including preparing financial statements.
  • Experience overseeing administrative operations including financial management, purchasing, human resources administration, and processing financial and payroll transactions.
  • Experience maintaining financial and personnel records in line with the University\'s financial/payroll and HR policies, or other similar policies.
  • Experience providing research services support, including grant research applications and processes, and grant administration.
  • Advanced skills working in FIS and HRIS, or similar administrative systems.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and databases.
  • Advanced skills with online video/audio conferencing applications (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time-management skills, with ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Aptitude for numbers and analyses, be able to multi-task, and has solid problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, tact, and sound judgement in the handling of sensitive and confidential matters.

USW Pay Band 14 -- $81,000 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $103,588. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
