We are looking for a people-oriented Business Manager to help us grow our research operations in Vancouver, Canada. This person will have a deep understanding of Research/Research culture, and the drive to create an environment of research excellence for our employees in Vancouver.

This person will drive and facilitates the business processes, hiring strategy, as well as local employee communications, with special attention played to relocations of individuals to the new site. This role will also provide insight and advice to management around personnel, policy, financial and operational issues, participate in overall operational strategy decisions, and assists in implementing best practices, policies and procedures within the organization. They will have the ability to think strategically and work with leadership to effectively develop and implement best practices, processes and procedures that facilitate consistent efficient management of employees and business practices. The Business Manager will also track and report on high level group and team objectives and on-going progress that aid MSR Vancouver leadership in identifying and removing obstacles.

Responsibilities:

Key member of the MSR Vancouver senior leadership team, with responsibility for the business aspects of MSR in Vancouver, including:

  • Establishing and maintaining hiring, onboarding and offboarding practices, including partnering with other labs and Microsoft groups to implement best practices.
  • People budget - working with the finance team and Microsoft Research Vancouver managers to drive successful onboarding and recruiting practices, forecast appropriately, and update the Managing Director.
  • Working with various Microsoft groups, including: Microsoft Engineering, Real Estate, Human Resources, Finance and others, as required to advocate for the needs of Vancouver-based employees.
  • Ensuring Microsoft Research Vancouver is compliant with Microsoft standards and policies in HR and business operations.
  • Handling special projects as requested by the Corporate Vice President and Managing Director of Microsoft Research Asia.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in relevant field (e.g., Liberal Arts, Business Administration, Management, Computer Science) AND 6+ years experience in business planning, strategy, human resources, project management, or business-related roles
  • OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to think strategically at a cross-group level and develop processes that facilitate consistent and effective management of the business, and particularly related to people-focused processes.
  • Effective cross-group skills, experience leading virtual teams, technical aptitude to engage with researchers and ability to develop internal and external relationships are critical for this role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing government relations in a research, education or similar environment.
  • Proven ability to drive and complete projects independently and to work on several diverse projects at the same time.
  • High level of motivation, self-starter, drive for results, team-work spirit.
  • 10+ years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in project management, business and/or workforce planning or similar experience.
  • Demonstrated people management experience.
  • Ability to read, write and speak in Simplified Chinese (Mandarin) Language.
Business Management IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $118,800 - CAD $214,800 per year.
