Your opportunity:

The Acceleration Consortium (AC) at the University of Toronto (U of T) is leading a transformative shiftin scientific discovery that will accelerate technology development and commercialization. The AC is a global community of academia, industry, and government that leverages the power of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, materials sciences, and high-throughput chemistry to create self-driving laboratories (SDLs), also called materials acceleration platforms (MAPs). These autonomous labs rapidly design materials and molecules needed for a sustainable, healthy, and resilient future, with applications ranging from renewable energy and consumer electronics to drugs. AC Staff Scientists will advance the infield of AI-driven autonomous discovery and develop the materials and molecules required to address society\xe2\x80\x99s largest challenges, such as climatechange, water pollution, and future pandemics.

The Acceleration Consortium received a $200M Canadian First Research Excellence Grant for seven years to develop self-driving labs for chemistry and materials, the largest ever grant to a Canadian University. We forge partnerships with industry to drive future economic prosperity and competitiveness as we drive a paradigm shift in accelerated discovery, and we aim to build a robust start-up and scale-up ecosystem in the Greater Toronto Area. As a Business Development Officer, you will be at the forefront of this meaningful work and act as the critical connective tissue as we build this community.

Reporting to the Director, Strategy & Partnership Acceleration Consortium, the Business Development Officer develops and executes strategies to increase business for the Acceleration Consortium. Their main duties include researching market trends and opportunities, developing business, and meeting with potential and existing partners.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Work collaboratively across the university to ensure annual targets are achieved
  • Developing and implementing strategic prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and recognition plans
  • Conducting detailed analysis and evaluation to determine trends/patterns and make recommendations to senior university officials. . Producing detailed statistical report and analysis on facilities utilization, planning and revenue generation/spending to support decision making
  • Identifying prospective partners and aligning them to key priorities of the AC and other community members. Writing detailed analytical profiles/research documents for senior leadership
  • Serve as a primary contact for inquiries regarding research, education, and partnerships, as well as networking events or other activities and programs that respond to industry needs and interests
  • Engage in extensive ecosystem networking to identify and engage potential industry and academic partners, entrepreneurs and other relevant associations and agencies with the aim of fostering mutually beneficial partnerships
  • Be a connector, facilitating the introduction of people and companies to share business, technical knowledge and experience
  • Manage key accounts, initiatives, projects, portfolios and programs while providing reviews, metrics and outcome assessments.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Doctorate Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of recent and related experience and a proven track record in business development and/or external partnership activities with a proven ability to advance strategic agendas.
  • Experience developing partnership plans that support research needs and objectives
  • Strong scientific background in an area relevant to innovation using artificial intelligence to accelerate design of high performance materials.
  • Experience cultivation high-profile prospective partnerships that advance strategic agendas.
  • Experience delivering presentation to promote program, opportunities and inititives
  • Experience producing statistical and financial information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; highly proactive, persuasive, and diplomatic
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, and meet multipule deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to write and communicate effectively with a wide-range of people, including administrators, government, industry and researchers.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 15 -- $86,011 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $109,993. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
