Your Challenge

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada\'s largest research and technology organization.

We are looking for a Business Development Officer (BDO) to provide strategic business advice and lead the development of strategic relationships with key stakeholders to support our Aquatic and Crop Resource Development (ACRD) Research Centre. The BDO would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

Recognized as a business development professional passionate about research and development and with a keen understanding of the Canadian innovation system, and its importance for Canadians, you will lead business development / client relations activities supporting the NRC\'s Aquatic and Crop Resource Development Research Centre. The ACRD\'s research facilities combined with our expertise, focussed strategic R&D and customized technical and advisory services, make the Aquatic and Crop Resource Development Research Centre an important resource for Canadian organizations focused on the sustainable transformation of Canadian agricultural and marine bio-resources into into food, feed and ingredients, and other high value bioproducts.

We are particularly seeking a candidate with interest in one or more of the following areas:
  • Cutting-edge science & technology projects;
  • Marine biotechnology;
  • Agriculture and agri-food biotechnologies for food security; and
  • Atypical fermentation, targeting R&D and client-driven activities in food, feed or marine applications.
The BDO works alongside our project coordination and science and technology teams. They manage our portfolio of agreements and contracts with Canadian and International universities, government organizations, and industry. They track status, and pro-actively ensure timely execution of agreements and contracts. They provides strategic guidance, senior level stakeholder engagement expertise, intellectual property management and licensing, complex agreement negotiation. As such, this position catalyzes business objectives and strategic plans, increasing and strengthening the NRC value proposition and stakeholder relationships, and helps to devise new business approaches.

The BDO supports the business and partnership objectives of the NRC by developing and implementing stakeholder engagement strategies to meet the objectives of the ACRD Research Centre. The BDO supports ACRD\'s management team, often leading contacts with high-level stakeholders in industry, government, and academia. The position must understand the priorities of the canadian community, as well as NRC\'s various programs, research centres, and divisions, the Government of Canada and Canada\'s R&D ecosystem; and must possess an up-to-date, sharp insight of stakeholder priorities in relevant technology domains.

The insight provided by this position will significantly guide the decisions of ACRD\'s management in relation to strategic initiatives, nationally, and internationally. The BDO is also expected to work with researchers at ACRD to establish collaborative relationships and projects with key stakeholders in industry, academia and government and to achieve targeted growth in new opportunities for ACRD to provide technical or research services to clients.

Education

Bachelor\'s degree, preferably in Engineering, Science or Business Administration.

Master\'s degree, in Science, Engineering or Business Administration would be an asset.

Experience
  • Recent experience in developing partnerships and managing relationships with with private sector firms, academic institutions and government departments.;
  • Recent experience in creating and developing opportunities for collaborative advancement of technology;
  • Experience leading complex negotiations of collaborative research and development and/or intellectual property agreements; and
  • Business experience and contacts in the life sciences, agri-food or marine bio-resource sector.
Assets:
  • Experience in leveraging intellectual property to address industry challenges;
  • Experience in international business contexts.

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC\'s directives.

Compensation

This position is classified as a Research Council Officer (RCO), a group that is unique to the NRC. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $57,220 to $161,754 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.

In addition, the incumbent will receive the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 per year.
