The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a temporary full-time Building Maintenance, in the Municipal Assets section of the Parks, Fleet and Facilities division. This temporary position is for a period up to July 2024.

Job description

This Building Maintenance (Municipal) position is responsible for the safe operations of the municipal properties owned and operated by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent\'s core values and competencies
  • Responsible for grounds maintenance, minor building repairs, refuse removal, and snow removal on a daily basis
  • Responsible for inspections on HVAC and building automations systems on a daily basis
  • Assist specialized contractors with mechanical, electrical and HVAC maintenance, as required
  • Report daily building and perimeter security checks
Essential qualifications
  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent education (e.g. GED certificate)
  • Related post-secondary education preferred (including courses or workshops)
  • Experience working in a building maintenance environment
  • Experience troubleshooting building equipment
  • Grounds maintenance experience
  • Experience with building repairs
  • Basic computer skills
Other qualifications
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and HVAC equipment an asset
Work environment/hours of work
  • This position works both indoors and outdoors
  • This position woks weekday hours, as well on-call after hours and weekends
COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Driver\'s licence/vehicle requirements

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver\'s license with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary. Mileage will be reimbursed as per the CUPE 12.1 collective agreement.

Background check requirements

Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements
  • Bending: frequent twisting (the job requires a variety of bending postures; snow shoveling, furniture moving, equipment moving, accessing tight areas in machine room, basements, attics etc.)
  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface (walking is required throughout the buildings including climbing stairs and on various types of surfaces)
  • Reaching: frequent reaching below shoulder, forward, backward, handling (these types of reaching motions are frequent during office furniture rearrangement tasks, cleaning of equipment and other surfaces task etc.)
  • Lifting: frequent lifting floor to waist, waist to shoulder, carrying, pushing below shoulder, pulling below shoulder (9.09 kgs to 22.73 kgs or 20 lbs to 50 lbs) (these types of lifting motions are frequent during office furniture rearrangement tasks and other equipment handling tasks)
  • Standing: frequent standing inside, outside (while trouble shooting or repairing equipment or during a majority of other building maintenance tasks, the employee will be in a standing posture)
  • Hands: frequent gripping (tasks requiring these types of hand manipulations would include; small equipment repair, plumbing repairs and some minor electrical and mechanical repairs)
  • Climbing: frequent climbing stairs (climbing if stairs is required in a majority of our buildings)
  • Foot action: frequent two foot action (two feet are engaged in a majority of above mentioned building maintenance tasks)
