With building service workers, engineers, technologists, peace officers and tradespeople we help keep all five of our campuses maintained and operating safely and efficiently.Position SummaryReporting to the Facilities Engineer, the Building Automation Systems (BAS) Specialist serves as:

  • The subject matter expert for new building automation and controls technologies projects,
  • Coordinator for projects related to the migration of legacy systems to BAS, and
  • Point of contact for projects related to identifying, justifying and implementing energy conservation measures.
This position is responsible for reviewing the work done by contractors and/or consultants including the design, implementation, commissioning and planning of technical operations including analyzing overall performance for these systems deployed in our facilities across our campuses.These systems include:
  • Building Automation Systems (BAS) Platforms: Reliable Controls, Schneider, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Delta Controls.
  • Building Systems Integration Platform: Tridium Niagara
  • Data Analytics Platform: SkyFoundry Skyspark
Duties
  • Collaborates with external Designers to implement additions and modifications to the BAS systems (hardware and software).
  • Tests and debugs new and revised operating sequences and system software revisions.
  • Provides technical BAS support to operations staff to resolve complex operational issues.
  • Sources replacement components, and manages product updates and enhancements.
  • Arranges and administers service contracts for system vendors and their system components.
  • Provides software and database support for upgrading and migrating from legacy systems to new BAS equipment and operating systems.
  • Reviews and approves consultant/contractor design packages and shop drawings.
  • Provides support with system programming and graphics development.
  • Establishes and continually improves design and technical guidelines and procedures for connections to the BAS network.
  • Applies unique and intuitive knowledge of many proprietary systems (hardware and software), gained either through experience or training.
  • Represents the Engineering and Operations Department at consultant and contractor meetings
  • Reviews consultant design packages.
  • Anticipates upcoming changes within the industry and provides strategy recommendations for the benefit of the University.
  • Interprets policy and regulations in relation to assessing energy conservation opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of an Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Instrumentation and Control or Building Environmental Systems Technology program or other related field.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the design of HVAC and/or building system controls, including substantial programming of digital controls and an in-depth knowledge of logic of automation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in one or more of the five different BAS and control platforms (hardware and software) and the programming of same in the unique product specific language
  • Knowledge of networking, electronic components, circuits and devices
  • Good knowledge of energy conservation and management best practices
