The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 continues its tradition of welcoming newcomers to Canada. The Welcome Home to Canada (WHTC) program is a six month employability program for new immigrants to Canada. If you are an unemployed or underemployed immigrant and facing barriers to meaningful employment this program may be an option for you. Why should you apply? About the program The program offers you:
  • A six month work term at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21
  • Mentorship and one-on-one supervision
  • English language training through the Communications in the Workplace course offered in partnership with Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia ISANS
  • Job search, resume and cover letter writing, and interview preparation training
  • Professional development and network-building opportunities
  • Possibility of a two week work placement opportunity with a second employer
  • Opportunities to participate in a Job Fair or a networking event
Job Title: Building Assistant Duration: 6 months from May to October 2023 Wages: $16.65 per hour Reports to: Building Manager Hours: 37.5 hours a week with two (2) paid rest periods of 15 minutes and one 30 minute unpaid lunch break each day. As the Museum operates 7 days a week, the workweek includes Saturdays and/or Sundays and irregular hours (evenings, weekends) Application Deadline: 5pm on April 14, 2023 Program eligibility
  • You must be either a permanent resident of Canada, Canadian citizen born outside of Canada (this means you have immigrated to Canada and have become a Canadian citizen) or a protected person as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act who is legally entitled to work in Canada and Nova Scotia
AND
  • You are unemployed or underemployed and facing barriers to employment such as lack of previous Canadian work experience, foreign credentials, language barriers or lack of professional networks.
Position Summary The Building Assistant provides an enjoyable experience for visitors attending public programs and private functions by providing support to the Facility Management Team and Group Sales Team. This position encompasses various duties from daily building maintenance to Group Sales set-ups and assisting with client requests. Responsibilities
  • Interact in a professional and respectful manner with staff and the public and clients as required
  • Set up, operation, and \'take down\' of all needed audio-visual equipment for CMIP programs when an outside contractor has not been hired
  • Set up and connect lectern with both power and microphone
  • Pre-set and operate house lights, stage lights and footlights
  • Adjust audio levels and operate audio sources (i.e., DVD/CD Player, audio cassette player, etc.)
  • Operate video sources (i.e., DVD/VCR players, etc.)
  • Operate projection equipment.
  • Assist with routine maintenance and repairs and perform preventative maintenance duties
  • Monitor, operate, and maintain computer-controlled systems that adjust building temperature
  • Assist in the scheduling of projects and work arrangements to provide minimum interference with operational duties and assignments.
  • Lift and move furniture within building
  • Assist with events, including load ins and outs & set ups as required (including working weekends, evenings and holidays)
Skills required
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to accept supervision
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Some Audio-visual experience helpful
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in general building and maintenance work
  • Able to physically perform the essential functions of the job; including lift and carry 50 pounds safely
  • Bend, stoop, reach, and work safely from ladders
  • Able to communicate effectively in English

This position is included within the Bargaining Unit under the Collective Agreement. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate for the position will be required to become a member of the Service Employees International Union Local 2, Brewery General and Professional Workers Union.
