The SFU Indigenous Languages Program (INLP) is a continuation of the award-winning SFU Kamloops Program from which Indigenous Studies programs, Indigenous languages and language courses were originally developed and offered. The mission of INLP and its Community Academic Outreach programs has been the collective and individual empowerment of Indigenous peoples through education, taking into account First Nations' own knowledge systems, histories, ways of being and learning. INLP works with speech communities and in partnership with Indigenous organizations on language revitalization initiatives and to enable Indigenous language learning off-campus in First Nations communities in BC and the Yukon.
About the Role
The INLP Budget Assistant position is a critical role to the operations as INLP provides high quality support to Indigenous partners and their students and serves as financial liaison. The financial work for INLP is complex and intricate with non-standard financial processes and timelines which are also unique to this program while serving Indigenous students living in remote communities to access courses offered through INLP. The Budget Assistant is responsible for providing support in Indigenous financial and budget processes and priorities. In addition, supports INLP student processes and INLP community engagement initiatives in accordance with University policies and procedures and protocols pertaining to INLP and Indigenous partnering communities in respectful and constructive working relationships. The position is responsible for maintaining FNEP community-related financial services; student enrollment and tracking, fees as well as admissions and related support services and serves a contact person of support on INLP.
The ideal candidate will be able to thrive in a busy and dynamic work environment with multiple objectives and concurrent deadlines. Attention to detail would be a strong asset to this position.
Qualifications
High school graduation and one year of post-secondary education or formal program in basic accounting or bookkeeping courses or training of moderate duration including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications. 3 years of experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.

  • Familiarity with post-secondary Indigenous language revitalization and related programs.
  • Good knowledge and experience with BC/Yukon Indigenous communities post-secondary education, training and business practices.
  • Good knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting procedures.
  • Ability to use enterprise-level information systems (e.g., PeopleSoft SIMS) at an intermediate level.
  • Ability to use enterprise-level financial information systems (e.g., Peoplesoft, FINS, FAST) applications at an intermediate level.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgement and initiative.
