Position Description
The Brand & Creative Lead is responsible for overseeing Science World's visual brand identity ensuring it is implemented consistently across all collateral and all channels (onsite, offsite and online). Reporting to the Director, Brand & Marketing - who owns Science World's overall brand identity (visual and content) - they work collaboratively within the Brand & Marketing team and across Science World to oversee and produce visual solutions that meet organizational needs, from concept to completion. This role also holds ownership of wayfinding across Science World, including branding of key visitation areas.
In addition to hands-on delivery, the Brand & Creative Lead generates creative briefs, and provides day-to-day art direction, feedback and mentoring to other team members to foster an atmosphere of continual improvement and excellence within the team. They also provide instruction and feedback to guide the work of design support (freelance, contract, and intern) to ensure a high level of technical quality and adherence to brand standards. In addition to art direction and design skills, the Brand & Creative Lead has strong leadership and communication abilities, as well as a deep understanding of design principles and methodologies.
Responsibilities
Oversee Science World's visual brand identity ensuring it is implemented consistently across all collateral/channels - from in-building wayfinding and signage, to fundraising, program and outreach initiatives, to digital communications and marketing assets, to design of merchandise for our Science Store
Hold ownership and be the art director for all photography and video shoots, including collaborating with stakeholders to translate business needs into creative briefs and shot lists, contracting, briefing and art directing external vendors, and providing sign-off for deliverables against the creative brief / brand standards
Hold ownership of wayfinding across Science World, including branding of key visitation areas
In collaboration with the Director, Brand & Marketing, develop and maintain a clear visual map of how our multi-channel customer experiences will come to life and increase brand relevance
Contribute to and provide mentorship to other team members inthe development of creative briefs by providing art and design direction, considerations and requirements
Provide day-to-day art direction by guiding, advising and mentoring fellow team members providing clear feedback within the creative process to maintain brand consistency and design quality, including mentoring designers to present finalized ideas and concepts to stakeholders
For new initiatives and products, develop design briefs by gathering information and data through research
Supervise contract/freelance designers and interns, including a briefing on tasks, overseeing and coaching on the creative process, and ensuring timely and on-brand delivery of projects
Develop and cultivate a deep understanding of the Science World brand and direct all creative outputs around it
Ensure best practices in layout, colour theory, composition, typography, etc. are applied by the team
Keep informed on current trends, tools, and processes for both print and digital, and make recommendations based on organizational and team needs
Liaise with external vendors to ensure work is high quality, timely, and within budget
Contribute to a team culture of creativity by sharing knowledge readily and bringing playfulness and experimentation into your work
Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
University degree or post-secondary education in Communication Design or related discipline
A minimum of 5+ years of brand and design experience gained in an in-house or agency setting
Significant experience of requirements gathering, creative brief generation, conceptualizing and delivering and/or overseeing delivery of a wide range of design projects from start to finish with minimal supervision
Experience of creating concepts for others to work on and mentoring other creative professionals
Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator primarily)
Fully fluent in both web and print media
A solid understanding of marketing and advertising principles
Familiarity with Science Worlds mission and involvement with the community
Skills, Abilities and Attitudes
Strong graphics and advanced print production skills. Photography skills (preferred)
Demonstrated organizational skills in project and time management, with an ability to work alone under pressure to meet multiple deadlines
A team player who works to improve the team's technical and creative performance
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels, both within the organization and with external stakeholders
Creative, technical and analytical skills
Ability to think and plan both strategically and methodically
Strong conceptual thinking skills to translate abstract ideas into a well-defined form
Strong consultative and problem-solving skills. Ability to build rapport and work/achieve results within cross-functional teams

This is a unionized position represented by CUPE 1004. The compensation rate is $38.64/hour.
