Project Description:
In March 2024, a consortium including McMaster University, the University of Ottawa, and Dalhousie University was awarded $115 million through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to develop Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) biomanufacturing facilities at each site. McMaster's $49.5 million share will support the transformation of the Fitzhenry Vector Lab into a process development and training space and the construction of a new state-of-the-art GMP biomanufacturing facility. These efforts are part of a nationally coordinated program promoting harmonized practices and shared infrastructure across sites.

Job Summary:
The Biomanufacturing Facility Manager - Infrastructure and Operations will lead the planning, implementation, and ongoing operational management of McMaster's biomanufacturing infrastructure. This individual will ensure effective and compliant delivery of all infrastructure-related elements, from capital project execution to long-term facility operations, in alignment with strategic research priorities, regulatory requirements, and institutional values. The role is pivotal during both phases of development: construction/renovation and full operational deployment, with a mandate to manage infrastructure, equipment, and supply logistics, while fostering a safe, inclusive, and high-performance environment.

Accountabilities:
Strategic Leadership & Capital Project Oversight
Oversee the delivery of McMaster's $49.5 million share of the BRIF infrastructure program.
Act as the lead interface with McMaster Facility Services, project consultants, and construction partners to ensure design, renovation, and construction objectives are met on time and on budget.
Coordinate with sister sites (University of Ottawa, Dalhousie) to ensure harmonized equipment procurement and shared practices.
Embed principles of equity, sustainability, accessibility, and regulatory compliance into all infrastructure decisions.
Infrastructure & Operational Management
Lead infrastructure readiness, including the phased installation, qualification, and certification of GMP-compliant equipment and systems.
Establish and maintain preventative maintenance schedules, vendor contracts, and service-level agreements.
Oversee procurement, inventory control, and stocking of critical equipment and single-use materials to support biomanufacturing.
Ensure regulatory readiness, including annual GMP compliance certification and institutional safety and inspection standards.
Risk, Safety & Compliance
Develop and implement facility-related risk mitigation plans, including emergency response, business continuity, and safety protocols.
Perform infrastructure audits and partner with compliance officers to meet building, safety, and environmental codes.
Promote lab safety culture and ensure robust documentation and operational records.
Fostering a positive safety culture through communication, keeping accurate records of training, inspections, incidents, and other safety-related activities.
Thorough understanding of relevant health and safety regulations.
People & Team Leadership
Supervise technical and facility staff; coordinate scheduling, training, and performance development.
Cultivate a culture of innovation, safety, and service excellence across a diverse, unionized workforce.
Partner with production and research staff to align infrastructure with evolving operational needs.
Financial & Administrative Oversight
Manage capital and operating budgets, ensuring cost-effectiveness and fiscal compliance.
Support the development of cost recovery models and operational sustainability planning.
Report on financial performance, infrastructure KPIs, and resource utilization to seniorleadership.
Communication & Collaboration
Serve on internal and external planning and operations committees.
Foster partnerships with academic, industry, and regulatory stakeholders.
Promote the facility's capabilities through outreach and engagement with users, researchers, and partners.

Qualifications:
Education:
Master's degree in the Biologic Sciences
Professional certification (e.g., PMP, Six Sigma) is an asset.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years' progressive experience in infrastructure or labfacility management, including oversight of capital projects andoperations.
Proven experience with GMP facilities, research or biomanufacturinginfrastructure, and managing teams in a scientific setting.
Familiarity with CFI-compliant procurement, regulatory certificationprocesses, and vendor negotiations.
Experience working in unionized environments and managing cross-functional teams.
Hands on lab experience, ideally in industry or a bio-manufacturingsetting.
Knowledge/Skills:
Strong leadership and communication skills across diverse teams and stakeholders.o
Advanced project planning, organizational, and problem-solving capabilities.o
Technical proficiency with equipment management, maintenance systems (e.g., CMMS), and infrastructure compliance.
Ability to operate in a dynamic, fast paced, and highly regulated environment.
