Wildlife Biologist

The Wildlife Program manages, conserves, enhances, restores, and allocates wildlife resources in the Ministry of Forests of the Province of British Columbia. The Wildlife Section is responsible for establishing a regional wildlife conservation, management and recreational use program focusing on species conservation, recovery, monitoring, and establishing a range of recreational use programs for wildlife. Within the Division, Regional Operations achieves the Ministry\xe2\x80\x99s service plan, business goals and objectives by implementing various programs and providing input to legislation, regulations, guidelines, objectives, and policy. Regional Operations works to ensure environmental expectations and standards are developed and communicated in an effective way to government, agencies, First Nations, industry, stakeholders, and the public. The Wildlife Biologist provides support to the Senior Wildlife Biologist and Wildlife Section Head by participating in all aspects of the delivery of the Wildlife Program in the regional office. This position applies biological theory, methodology and technical knowledge of wildlife species, current research, techniques, and technologies, to assess management options on wildlife species. Guided by provincial legislation including the Wildlife Act and Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People Act, and associated federal legislation, policy, procedures and regulations, the position develops, evaluates, and implements wildlife species management programs to meet Ministry wildlife objectives. This position applies sound scientific judgment, creativity, ingenuity, and critical thinking to plan, direct, coordinate and implement components of complex resource management issues. Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing project budgets, contracts, and human resources; providing professional advice and technical expertise; collaborating with First Nations; working with other provincial and federal government agencies; engaging external stakeholders; and partnering with private industry, post-secondary institutions, and public groups. The successful candidate will work in a team of resource management professionals, and in a collaboration with First Nations, to meet ministry wildlife objectives. Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below:
Education

  • Master of Science degree (or higher) in biological sciences or a related field and 2 years related experience*; OR
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in biological sciences or a related field and 4 years of related experience*, OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience* may be considered.
  • Registered (or immediately eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.
Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Biologist (RP Bio) with the College of Applied Biology within 6 months of appointment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be confirmed. If you are not currently registered, advise how you have confirmed with the CAB that you are immediately eligible.
  • Related experience includes:
  • Experience in field-based biological sampling, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience providing advice within a regulatory regime.
  • Experience assessing and monitoring natural resources.
  • Experience in designing, developing, and delivering wildlife species and habitat management strategies, including population and habitat inventories and assessments.
  • Experience in methodologies used to assess wildlife population and habitat parameters and collecting, analyzing, and reporting biological data.
  • Experience in interpretation, and application of a resource management program under government legislation and policy.
  • Experience as a science specialist or advisor to a large government or private resource management organization.
  • Experience engaging, communicating, and partnering with First Nations and Indigenous peoples, stakeholders, universities and NGO groups.

Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following:
  • Experience in game and harvest management.
  • Experience in leading staff in project or field settings.
  • Advanced scientific knowledge of a speciality area.
  • Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.
