Bar Supervisor (WUSA Bar Operations) Position Overview
The Bar Supervisor supports the Area Manager, Food & Bar Operations assisting in overseeing day-to-day operations of WUSA's campus bar. This role ensures safe, compliant, and efficient service, supervises part-time bartenders, and maintains alignment with University of Waterloo Policy 21, AGCO liquor regulations, and the Campus Bar Operations Agreement. The Supervisor acts as a working lead on shift, balancing hands-on bartending with oversight, training, and operational audits.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Safety & Compliance
Enforce responsible service of alcohol standards in compliance with Policy 21, AGCO regulations, and internal procedures.
Conduct opening, mid-shift, and closing checklists covering safety, security, sanitation, and cash control.
Perform routine audits of ID checks, drink service, and incident logging to ensure compliance and consistency.
Support the Manager in emergency response procedures (evacuations, medical incidents, conflict de-escalation).
2. Staff Supervision & Training
Supervise, coach, and mentor part-time bartenders and floor staff during shifts.
Deliver ongoing training in Smart Serve practices, cocktail preparation, inclusivity, and incident handling.
Provide shift feedback, document performance, and support scheduling adjustments when required.
Ensure each shift has properly briefed staff and adequate coverage based on event risk level and expected attendance.
3. Financial Controls & POS Reconciliation
Oversee accurate cash handling, tills, and POS system reconciliation at the end of shifts.
Verify and sign off on voids, discounts, and refunds in accordance with policy.
Support inventory counts, waste tracking, and stock movement logs to maintain accountability.
4. Menu Development & Guest Experience
Assist in the creation of cocktail, mocktail, and seasonal beverage menus that align with student trends and cost targets.
Train staff on new menu rollouts, ensuring consistent presentation and quality control.
Monitor guest feedback, recommend menu or service improvements to the Area Manager.
5. Collaboration & Reporting
Act as the Manager on Duty in the absence of the Campus Bar Manager.
Document and escalate incidents, audit findings, or operational concerns.
Collaborate with security, student event organizers, and UW services to ensure a safe, inclusive environment.
Qualifications Smart Serve Certification (required)
Minimum 2 years bartending experience; supervisory/lead bartender experience strongly preferred.
Strong knowledge of cocktail preparation, beer/wine/spirits, and menu development.
Understanding of Ontario liquor laws, UW Policy 21, and responsible alcohol service.
Demonstrated leadership, training, and conflict-management skills.
Ability to perform financial reconciliations, audits, and accurate reporting.
Working Conditions
Ability to perform heavy lifting of products, inventory, equipment.
Ability to stand on your feet for long periods of time.
Evening/Weekends availability required

Pay: $20.00-$20.50 per hour
