Underground Backfill Specialist
Position Description:
This role guides the Operations and Technical Services teams in use of paste backfill and concrete underground. The primary responsibility is to ensure safe extraction of gold ore through the provision of comprehensive design and implementation relating to paste backfill. The backfill specialist must also optimize paste backfill design parameters and systems, develop and ensure QA/QC procedures are being followed, provide professional consultation on matters relating to backfill and concrete, and champion continuous improvement projects. This position requires a sound understanding of mine design and planning, including schedule and geotechnical constraints.
Responsibilities:

• Promote safety in the workplace and demonstrating a personal commitment to safety by identifying and addressing hazards, participating in improving safety and ensuring all reporting requirements are completed.
• Review and update the Pastefill Management Plan and its associated procedures as required (including QA/QC, operational backfill procedures, technical services templates and forms, etc.).
• Coordination with the technical services team to ensure backfill schedules are as required for geotechnical and planning purposes.
• Review and approve pastefill print packages and improve/update the process & templates on a regular basis.
• Perform regular underground inspections to ensure pastefill and concrete practices are performing as planned.
• Complete monthly void reports, tracking all open and filled voids in the underground workings.
• Work closely with mine operations to ensure backfill plans are executed properly, and QA/QC methods are being adhered to.
• Provide professional support to Technical Services and Operations regarding backfill and concrete.
• Review engineering designs and planning to ensure that all necessary safety requirements are met.
• Review stope concept designs to ensure safe and efficient production plans are created.
• Provide project management leadership and/or act as the lead on studies and projects.
• Identify areas for continuous improvement and establish improvement projects and coordinate improvement projects.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in mining engineering or a degree/diploma in related field.
• Minimum of four (4) years of experience in an underground mining environment post-graduation.
• Experience in pastefill as a backfill system for underground mining.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and mining software such as Deswik.
• Strong understanding of fluid mechanics, concrete/pastefill strengths, paste plant operation, and backfill in underground mining.
• Experience with in-elastic numerical stress modeling.
• Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
• Exceptional communication skills with a solution-focused mindset and a track record of high-quality work ownership.
• Fluent in English (oral and written).

About the Team: Hemlo has produced more than 21 million ounces of gold and has been operating continuously for more than 30 years.
