Private Funds Lawyer

The opportunity

Manulife seeks a private funds lawyer with 3 to 8 years of substantial work experience involving structuring, negotiating, and closing private equity, real estate or other private markets funds and fundraising mandates, and related ongoing private fund management. The successful candidates will be a securities and investment management lawyer with experience in private funds formation and management, including collective investment vehicles, separately managed accounts, and managed joint ventures. Experience with mergers and acquisitions improves any candidacy, as would experience in fund formation outside of Canada, especially Europe, but also the U.S. Above all, we seek colleagues who act as trusted advisors and broad problem solvers to partner with business clients to develop prudent, creative solutions that advance and protect the company\xe2\x80\x99s interests.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Partner with internal clients to analyze and structure new private markets funds and mandates, globally
  • Review, analyze and negotiate fund and transactional agreements
  • Manage fund formation and transaction processes from origination through closing
  • Direct outside counsel in connection with fund formation matters
  • Advise on securities law matters relating to private markets investment management
  • Keep abreast of legal, regulatory and market developments
  • Apply legal principles in a practical way to support and protect the company
  • Provide general corporate advice to support the company\xe2\x80\x99s investment businesses and operations

This position works closely with the company\xe2\x80\x99s global investment management segment, Manulife Investment Management, and its investment, product development and distribution teams, that develop and launch private markets funds around the world. The position will also collaborate with other business teams and legal colleagues in Canada, U.S., Europe and Asia to support investment management, fundraising, asset origination and corporate initiatives.

What we are looking for

Juris Doctor with 3+ years of meaningful experience * Must be (or become) licensed to practice law in at least one Province in Canada
  • Integrity, collegiality, team orientation, and professionalism
  • Strong analytical abilities, excellent judgment and outstanding communication skills
  • Prior work experience at a major law firm and/or in a corporate environment
  • Ability to work effectively with clients and colleagues remotely and across the globe
  • Adaptability to shifting demands in an evolving environment
  • Prior cross-border legal experience in Europe or the US is not required but would be an advantage

Salary & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Primary Location Toronto, Ontario

Salary range is expected to be between $120,400.00 CAD - $223,700.00 CAD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
