Position Summary

We are looking for an Associate Technical Analyst to assist with the curation of the scientific software development ecosystem of the Pugh Lab at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Our lab has ~25 members including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, staff scientists, clinical research coordinators and a dedicated team of 3 full-time software developers. Examples of some of our open-source software are cBioPortal and CReSCENT.

The Pugh Lab GitHub has all the open-source software we have developed available at The Associate Technical Analyst will join our software development team to contribute to these and new projects in the following roles:

Duties

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Data Curation

  • Improve data accessibility within existing Pugh Lab applications by curating and running public and generated data.
  • Support existing staff and researchers in learning and adopting software development and data management best practices.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of training and standard operating protocol material including software documentation to help guide the research community.
  • Clearly communicate complex technical information and concepts to lab members with varying technical backgrounds, including those new to software development.
Software Development Support
  • Work closely with cancer researchers and clinicians to understand research problems and clinical needs to eventually transform these needs into software solutions.
  • Work closely with other software engineers, to extend the Pugh Lab software front- and back-end documentation and codebase to support evolving analysis or curation needs.
  • Rapidly troubleshoot and report problems/bugs within existing software systems.
  • Participate in a development team that continually seeks to increase performance and is open to adopting new software engineering techniques and practices towards this goal.
Qualifications
  • BSc in computer science, computational biology or a related field is preferred
  • At least 1 year related experience in software engineering or in a computational lab setting.
  • Some experience in R, Javascript, Node.js and MongoDB.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate a small-scale software project.
  • Ability to adapt to changing requirements/timelines.
  • Ability to document the software for non-technical and technical users.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
