My name is Harjot Atwal. I'm an experienced real estate lawyer and prolific writer (60-70+ legal articles published in last 5 years). This will not look like a normal Indeed advertisement, since I am neither normal nor am I looking for someone normal.
When I got my 1st articling position, I worked on a $500 monthly stipend (literally $25 per day) before graduating to making $12/hour (minimum wage at that time) and upwards from there. I am offering substantially more at the outset as well as an opportunity to grow with me.
I REQUIRE SOMEONE WITH AT LEAST 1 YEAR OF REAL ESTATE LAWYER EXPERIENCE
I am offering a base salary of $30,000 annually to start. Beyond that, there will be a file-split basis for compensation. For any file I provide you, 60% of the legal fees will go to the law firm, and 40% of the legal fees will go to you. For any file you bring in to the firm, the fee split will be 50/50.
There will be no room for negotiation at the outset . There will be 3-month performance reviews. The compensation arrangement may be changed based on your performance. I will also provide a year-end bonus, again based on performance.
YOU WILL BE RUNNING MY BUSINESS
I cannot impress upon you how difficult it is for me to trust someone with something so dear to me. If I put my faith in you, I expect you to be in it for the long haul. To qualify myself, I am a real estate lawyer, mortgage agent - level 1, and currently pursuing my realtor license. I have big dreams, and am eager to find a junior lawyer who is willing to grow with me. The guy who trained me literally wrote a book on Condominium Law. I want someone to run my practice so I can have time to also write a real estate legal textbook.
THIS IS RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE LAW PRACTICE
Read this article (https://www.law360.ca/ca/articles/1881142/making-it-big-commercial-vs-residential-real-estate-law-harjot-atwal-).
If this article resonates with you in some way, and you think that engaging in more complex commercial real estate may make you anxious, but you have an entrepreneurial mindset and like the idea of becoming as much a businessperson as a lawyer...then you are looking in the right place.
I REQUIRE YOU TO BECOME A WRITER AND LEARN ABOUT MORTGAGES
I do not care if we receive exactly 0 referrals from any or every piece of writing you publish on real estate law. Read this article (https://www.law360.ca/ca/articles/1881143/why-law-school-grades-don-t-always-matter-but-writing-does-harjot-atwal-).
Writing is learning, simply put. There will be moments of downtime. During those moments, you will be either writing articles or learning about mortgage agent work.
My mother has a financial services company, she is my primary referral source, and I sub-lease office space from her. You will learn from her and her office manager about the mortgage side of things, while you fine-tune your real estate lawyer skills.
WRITING SAMPLE
If I have to e-mail you to ask you for a writing sample, and you do not automatically submit one when applying to the job, you are already at a disadvantage in terms of my consideration during the hiring process. I also may just not e-mail you.
