The School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor, tenure in the field of Global Health Ethics. The successful candidate will hold the Mary and Maurice Young Professorship in Applied Ethics, subject to university approvals.

The SPPH is a research-intensive unit that also has a strong emphasis on education. SPPH is home to approximately 65 primary faculty members and 350 graduate students whose research interests align with four divisions: 1) Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Public Health Practice; 2) Health in Populations; 3) Health Services and Systems; and 4) Occupational and Environmental Health. SPPH also contains several research centres focused on topics that cross-cut more than one division, such as ethics, Indigenous health, and research methodology. The W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics (CAE), housed within SPPH, is especially relevant to this position. SPPH provides training for undergraduate, graduate, and post-professional students across multiple programs, including PhD and MPH degrees.

Reporting to the Director of SPPH, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a productive research program in global health ethics. Global health ethics is understood here to involve an explicitly normative focus, for example, by addressing moral dilemmas in global health contexts, studying policies to reduce global health inequities, or promoting decolonization of global health. A productive research program includes publications in high quality, peer reviewed journals and successful applications for external research funding. Research programs that positively impact global health policies or interventions at a practical level will be encouraged and count favourably in merit evaluations. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the teaching activities of the new Master\xe2\x80\x99s in Global Health Program including develop graduate course(s) as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners. Finally, the successful candidate will be expected to be affiliated with W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD. Given the inherently interdisciplinary nature of global health ethics, the successful candidate\xe2\x80\x99s PhD may be in a number of fields, including but not limited to applied ethics, social sciences, and public health. The successful candidate will provide evidence of sustained and productive scholarly activity in global health ethics through publications on global health ethics in peer reviewed journals and success in obtaining external research funding. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and ability to direct graduate students and must be willing to participate in the affairs of SPPH and the University.

The successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity. Equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice are essential to academic excellence, as well as to fostering an inclusive community for voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged. Candidates who bring diverse perspectives and lived experiences are strongly encouraged to apply as we strive to enhance diversity, inclusiveness, socio-cultural representation, and perspective of SPPH.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Please submit your application online at: An application package should include a letter of application outlining the applicant\xe2\x80\x99s research and teaching interests, accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae and the names of four arm\xe2\x80\x99s length references. Please also provide a brief statement (1-2 pages) of current or planned contributions to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in academic, professional, or community contexts.

Should you have any queries around this position, please contact the Director of Administration at .

Review of applications will begin on October 31, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2024 or upon a date to be mutually agreed.
