We are currently recruiting for an Associate with experience in preparing and executing valuations for private equity investments, to join the Valuations Group within Finance at CPP Investments. The Valuations Group, specifically within Private Markets has overall accountability and oversight for the quarterly valuation for all illiquid and private investments at CPP Investments. The Valuations Group performs independent quarterly valuations for the following asset classes: private debt, private equity, infrastructure, sustainable energies, and venture capital.

The Associate will be primarily accountable for modelling and report writing of private equity assets, including exercising sound judgment in determining the proper valuation approach and methodologies for new assets, and assets where the Valuations Team has not previously modelled. The Associate will work directly with the Valuations Team managers on enhancing the valuation processes and framework, and seeking opportunities to increase team efficiencies. The role will require close collaboration across teams that include Investment Departments, Operations, Financial Policy & Reporting among others to support ongoing deliverables as well as strategic initiatives.

Role-Specific Accountabilities:
  • Organize and execute the quarterly valuation processes and provide insightful valuation analysis to proactively identify material quarterly valuation movements.
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate investments within the private equity assets including direct private equity, infrastructure, sustainable energies, and venture capital.
  • Build and review complex financial models, assess, and challenge assumptions and test sensitivities, at the asset and portfolio level.
  • Stratify and analyze large data sets to identify historical performance trends, detect correlations, identify key value drivers, and perform calibration.
  • Prepare detailed valuation reports and valuation highlights for inclusion in Valuation Committee, Audit Committee and other board level reporting.
  • Facilitate and coordinate external valuation process and respond to queries or information requests from advisors and auditors.
  • Train, mentor, review and validate financial models prepared by junior staffs.
  • Monitor global market events (such as tax reforms and significant accounting changes and quickly strategy assessment of valuation impacts).
  • Work closely with investment professionals worldwide to execute on the quarterly valuation process and onboard new deals as well as cross functionally with other departments to ensure alignment with our vision, goals, and values.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate or Master\'s Degree in Finance, Commerce, Economics or other related discipline.
  • Completion or near completion of the Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) designation
  • Professional designations such as CFA, FRM, CPA, are considered an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience including minimum 2 years of relevant valuation experience in professional valuation services firms, asset managers, and/or pension funds.
  • Solid understanding of how the private equity world works.
  • Excellent research, financial modelling, analytical and valuation skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with high degree of professionalism and ability to present ideas in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships across the organization.
  • Team player with ability to deliver in a high-performance culture operating under time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coach a high performing team, ability to coach junior staff in modeling and financial analysis.
  • Willingness to actively contribute to a positive and highly effective and collaborative team culture.
  • Working experience with business intelligence tools is an asset (e.g., Tableau, Python etc.).
