Description: The University Health Network, a University of Toronto (U of T) teaching hospital, and the UHN Department of Medicine are seeking applicants for the inaugural Speck Family Chair in Emerging Infectious Diseases. The successful candidate must already hold, or be eligible for, a full-time clinical (MD) or status-only academic appointment within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, U of T, at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The term of the Chair position is 5 years with the opportunity for one 5-year renewal following a successful review. Applications will be accepted until 26 August 2022 or until filled. Position start date is 15 September 2022 or a mutually agreed upon date.
The Chair will be held by a member of the UHN Department of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases, who is a world-renowned clinician investigator or clinician scientist and who has significant leadership experience and expertise in international clinical trials. The focus of the Chair will be to engage in clinical research and trials related to emerging infectious diseases, including but not limited to COVID-19. The holder of the Chair will provide an annual report of their research and related academic activities to the Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Univeristy of Toronto, the President and CEO of UHN, and the CEO of the UHN Foundation. The Chair holder will acknowledge that they hold the Speck Family Chair in Emerging Infectious Diseases in all profesional communications, publications and lectures, and any activities supported through the Fund.
We welcome applicants, working in any clinical research domain directly relevant to emerging infectious diseases, including but not limited to COVID-19, with a corresponding international reputation.
The successful candidate must have a demonstrably strong research record and hold either an MD or a PhD in a related discipline with significant expertise in infectious diseases and clinical trials. If a practicing clinician, they must hold or be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario. The candidate’s excellence in scholarly achievement should be evidenced by international collaborations and peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, or alternate academic activities, professional activities, or equivalent lived experience with demonstrable impact. A track record of collaborative science, productivity, demonstrable excellence in clinical trials and clinical research and demonstration of effective leadership in the field of research is essential.
The Chair holder’s total remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Chair will be based at the University Health Network, and if the Chair holder is a clinician, they are expected to become/remain a member of the UHN Department of Medicine academic practice plan.
The portion of the annual investment return from the Chair Fund, shall be made available each year to provide salary, benefits and/or research support to the holder of the Chair.
