The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Faculty Lead, Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaborative (TAAAC) Medicine. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The term of appointment is three years, renewable once an additional 3-5 years, following a successful review. Effective start date will be January 1, 2023, or sooner as mutually agreed upon.

The Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaborative (TAAAC) is an educational collaboration between the Department of Medicine (DoM), University of Toronto and the Department of Medicine, Addis Ababa University (AAU) to provide faculty oversight in residency training in the subspecialties of internal medicine. The goal is not to have DoM physicians deliver care themselves, but to provide mentorship and supervision to AAU resident trainees' as they develop clinical skills and knowledge. TAAAC has accelerated the development and training of many medical subspecialists in Ethiopia, including Hematology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Emergency Medicine, Nephrology and Critical Care Medicine. New opportunities are being sought, e.g., to develop specialists in Rheumatology and Interventional Cardiology.

The responsibilities of the DoM Faculty Lead, TAAAC Medicine include:

  • Assisting the DoM and AAU in setting strategic directions for TAAAC Medicine
  • Ensure high quality and timely curriculum co-development and delivery each year of 2-3 one-month teaching blocks at AAU for the identified specialties.
  • Ensure that the program employs a process of continuous programmatic review and improvement through the collection and analysis of information regarding all aspects of the program and report on the same to the Education Executive Committee and Chair of the Department.
  • Coordinating the identification and recruitment of DoM faculty to provide needed teaching and supervision to the residency programs at AAU in the participating subspecialties
  • Working with the hospital practice plans to find creative solutions for faculty wishing to participate
  • Oversight of the selection of residents/fellows who express interest in accompanying a TAAAC Medicine teaching trip as an elective.
  • Organization and conduct of pre-trip briefings to orient and prepare faculty and learners for teaching trips to AAU, and to debrief groups upon return.
  • Oversight of virtual teaching sessions and outgoing teaching trips to Addis Ababa for the first week of the teaching month to deepen the relationship between the two Departments, to ensure the comfort and safety of each new teaching group, to update and refresh their knowledge and relationships with the participating learners, training programs and curriculum needs.
  • Program development and innovation
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of TAAAC to implement overall programmatic goals.
  • Participate in grant writing and fundraising efforts for TAAAC Medicine.
  • Ensure alignment and coordination of TAAAC Medicine within the DoM, including the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion principles as per the Departmental Strategic Plan.
The capabilities and skills of the Faculty Lead should include:
  • Advanced training (preferably a graduate degree) in cross cultural education/, quality improvement, social sciences, or humanities and at least five years' experience in scholarship in one or more of these areas.
  • Global health experience. Knowledge of Ethiopian culture would be an asset.
  • Communication and Relationship Management: Communicates clearly in a responsive manner with a diversity of individuals, groups, and organizations. The Faculty Lead, TAAAC Medicine, establishes and nurtures - directly or indirectly - constructive and collaborative interactions with individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • Leadership and Change Management: Engages, motivates, and facilitates individuals, groups, and organizations to develop a shared vision and achieve related goals and objectives. The Faculty Lead, TAAAC Medicine, can lead change and implement innovations within a supportive culture.
  • Professionalism and Self-Management: Aligns personal and organizational conduct with ethical and professional principles that include responsibility, self-reflection, and self-discipline. The Faculty Lead, TAAAC Medicine, recognizes both his or her personal strengths and limitations; demonstrates a commitment to improvement and lifelong learning; and leads by example.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Monitors, seeks information from, and networks with, internal and external stakeholders. In doing so, the Faculty Lead, TAAAC Medicine, develops an understanding of how things work, identifies trends and priorities, and builds individual and organizational relationships.
  • Management Skills: Manages the DoM's participation in TAAAC by developing, encouraging, and enabling people, and effectively utilizing resources and information. The Faculty Lead, TAAAC Medicine, demonstrates political astuteness and good judgment about what can and cannot realistically be done.
  • Provides insights and suggestions to the DoM and TAAAC leadership regarding budgetary needs, status, and accountability.
The Faculty Lead reports to the Vice-Chair, Education (VCE) and, through the VCE, to the Chair of the Department of Medicine.

Applicants must hold an MD degree, be eligible for certification in internal medicine or a medicine specialty by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure in Ontario.

The Faculty Lead Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaborative (TAAAC) Medicine will receive administrative support and an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine.

The stipend associated with this position protects 1.0 day per week.
