DescriptionThe Eng Student Center in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Associate Director.Reporting to the Director, Business Operations for the Schulich School of Engineering and working closely with the Associate Dean, Student Affairs & Senior Associate Dean. The Associate Director, Student Services is responsible for the leadership in the Engineering Student Centre for the Schulich School of Engineering. The Associate Director, Student Services will nurture a student success culture using leading initiatives, programs, facilities, and functions on a school-wide basis. Such a culture needs to focus on the student holistically, be pervasive and integrated across all academic and academic support areas, incorporate contemporary student development theory, and practice, and transform the student environment in SSE into a highly engaged one with significant measurable growth in student success. This position is an in-person role and primarily on campus for five days per week and is not suitable for a regular remote work schedule.Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):Strategic Leadership and Staff Leadership

  • Provide strategies, management, structure and process for the assessment, planning and initiation of services, programs and initiatives in support of student success. These strategies will be initiated by the Associate Director in concert with the Dean and the Associate Dean. Then the strategies will be measured against a matrix of student enrollment and performance numbers and will be managed to optimize results.
  • This role will be responsible for the design and development of the processes necessary to perform the strategic initiatives that support student success, student engagement and student retention.
  • Creating, championing and implementing strategies that engender student success and support the diversity initiatives for the University and Schulich School of Engineering.
  • Work closely and in concert with the Dean, the Director, Associate Deans and Department Heads and Managers.
  • This role will support all initiatives that are connected with student success and is expected to provide leadership to the larger team of student services.
  • This position supervises other leaders, who are managing teams of AUPE staff up to approximately 25 total staff.
  • Overall managerial responsibilities for various student focused units within SSE which include the Engineering Student Centre, the accompanying Engineering Academic Success Centre, the Engineering Career Centre & Student Experience team and the Masters Engineering team.
  • Responsible for hiring, staff performance, salary administration, promotions, reclassifications and staff relations issues. He/she must exercise skill in managing people and provide them with a productive environment and career opportunities.
  • Manages staff through effective recruitment, selection, training, and assignment of personnel, organization of functions, establishment of policies, procedures, and standards, monitoring of performance and focusing of staff efforts on university goals.
  • Must bring a focus on service for students to the staff and ensure training for competency within the team.
Student Engagement, Success, and Retention
  • Develop approaches where the student and the institution respond well to each other and the student is strongly engaged in his/her learning program and university life. This will involve a complex process of following student success from their initial application, their registration, their education, their internship, graduation and potential for employment.
  • Detailed interactions with the Registrar Office, being proactive with calendar changes to the student requirements and providing strategic advice to the processes that support students in SSE and in the wider campus.
  • An in-depth understanding of the role that transition, learning support and student development programs play in the retention of students and ensurinh that those programs have the highest potential to ensure student success.
  • This leader will provide direction for the staff involved with scheduling and improving student experience, student recruitment and registration, student academic development support, internship and eventually graduation
Academic Support and Service to Students
  • Work in partnership with the academic enterprise to provide initiatives, programs and facilities to enhance student retention.
  • This role will be responsible for delivering the initiatives put forward by academic leadership, monitoring the measurables and adjusting as necessary.
  • Create programs within the Engineering degree that respond to indicated needs within the academic performance of students.
  • Measure the success of these programs to site improvement and these programs will be created in consultation with the academic leadership team.
  • Work with the central Student Services team to support the PASS program.
  • Responsible for the supervision, hiring and success of the Learning Assistants for first-year engineering courses and common core courses as required.
  • This includes metrics, evaluating and working with the Academic Development Specialist to ensure support is accessible and relevant.
  • Ensure strategies are in place to research and understand the continuously evolving needs of students and the supports required.
  • Develop highly effective and collaborative relationships within the student services portfolio as well as across campus to optimize service delivery to students.
  • To do so, the Associate Director will work to nurture a strong student-centered mindset within SSE to ensure services provided are of the highest quality and relevance.
  • Work closely in a management and decision-making capacity with appropriate Associate Deans and the Registrar Office to ensure student supports.
International Student Support
  • Though all services are open to all students, the Associate Director must be sensitive to the unique and additional needs of international students. They must understand these needs, and provide for them in a way that integrates international students with the SSE experience while addressing the needs of those from other countries, cultures or educational systems, in conjunction with the university-wide initiatives already in place.
  • Oversee path for incoming international students, assuring their introduction to the Faculty.
  • Prepare advising sessions particular to the international students needs.
  • Conduct events that support social and academic success for international students.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • University degree is required and accumulation of 10 years in progressively senior leadership positions in a post-secondary or education setting is necessary.
  • A Masters degree in business, professional engineering designation, or a degree in a related field would be considered an asset.
  • A thorough understanding of the Schulich School of Engineering programs, content, objects and strategic focus, is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of academic and administrative policies and procedures of the University of Calgary, specifically the ones applicable to the Internship process is required.
  • Knowledge of the breadth of the engineering industry, including engineering assignments, and job market trends.
  • A proven ability to build relations and foster contacts within industry, and the national and international community.
  • A thorough understanding of how the employee and employer relationship, and current labour practices, would apply to our Internship Program would be a significant asset.
  • Strong communication skills, able to connect with a variety of stakeholders including business leaders, Academic Faculty, the university community, students, as well as other academic institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, conflicting priorities, with an aptitude in problem solving and creative thinking.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and manage a multi-faceted staffing group.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working in entrepreneurial environments, by building relationships to provide students with unique experiences in business startups.
  • The ability to see solutions, make decisions and think strategically, while managing a large team is necessary.
