Job Summary

Queen's Health Sciences (QHS), in partnership with the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) is co-developing a program for training health professionals living along the western James Bay coast. The Queen's-Weeneebayko Health Education Program marks a new approach to educating and supporting Indigenous youth to pursue careers in healthcare and provides a unique model for transforming Indigenous health across Canada. Through this partnership, QHS and WAHA will co-create decolonized, interprofessional curricula for medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and paramedicine.


Reporting to the Director, Queen's - Weeneebayko Health Education Program, the Associate Director, Indigenous Curriculum Development is responsible for leading and coordinating curriculum development for the proposed Queen's-Weeneebayko Health Education Campus. The Associated Director, Indigenous Curriculum Development will work with all three Schools in QHS, as well as other external partners, identifying the curricular resources required to engage in the major modification of QHS curriculum that is needed for the proposed campus. This individual will lead the curriculum team in transforming curriculum into a decolonized, interprofessional program fit for delivery at the proposed campus.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Provide strategic direction and leadership for, and engage in, research and scholarly activity in Indigenous health education related to the Queen's-Weeneebayko Health Education Campus (QWHEC).


- Provide leadership in Indigenous evaluation of initiatives for QWHEC, including program development, delivery of education and other aspects of project effectiveness.


- Maintain knowledge of current Indigenous pedagogical trends and translate the knowledge gained into practice of program development and offerings.


- Provide recommendations and guidance to the Director, Queen's - Weeneebayko Health Education Program to improve processes in support of long-term operational effectiveness.


- Plan, prioritize and supervise the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance and coaching.


- Lead the delivery of professional development for faculty participating in the project.


- Act as a resource to educational leaders by providing consultation to established curriculum and program development committees.


- Maintain relationships with educators and education scholars at Queen's University beyond the Faculty of Health Sciences (for example, Indigenous Teacher Education Program).


- Maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders on Indigenous health sciences education at institutes of higher education across Canada and internationally.


- Promote a culture of inclusion, with a commitment to the university's equity, diversity, inclusion and Indigenization initiatives.


- Develop and validate an educational competency framework for Indigenous healthcare providers in remote communities.


- Re-design the curricular calendar to align with seasons and the relevant communities' cultural calendar.


- Prepare for and conduct the modification of existing health professions curricula or development of new programs, in keeping with Queen's University academic policy, which include:


o Nursing, Medicine, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy programs

o Determining from existing curricular components what cannot change and what can be changed

o Identifying interprofessional content by program and clustering into interprofessional course content

o Conducting a re-design of the organization of the curriculum

o Identifying and developing appropriate educational pedagogy

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- PhD in education or Master's degree in Education with experience relevant to the project.


- Demonstrated expertise in Indigenous pedagogy.


- A record of accomplishments in Indigenous education at the postsecondary level.


- Several years of administrative and organizational management experience.


- Indigenous ancestry or a demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities is preferred.


- Experience in an Academic Health Sciences Centre is an asset.


- Proven ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external partners.


- Proven commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in past work experience.

- Demonstrated leadership with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships that bring a variety of disciplines and expertise together.

- Determine recommendations and implementation strategies for the major modification of current programs or creation of new programs to meet the QWHEC deliverables.


- Determine requirements for the accreditation, quality assurance process, and other approvals for QWHEC programs.


- Determine needs for teaching and learning development and decide how to implement programs and services to address needs.


- Determine the most appropriate strategies to use in addressing teaching and learning related issues and concerns.


- Balance competing priorities in reaching decisions.


- Determine needs for programming for faculty to develop skills in curricular development and delivery.


- Determine priorities and organize time appropriately.
